low costs, it has become essential to find new solutions that
respond these requirements. Ultra-Wideband seems to be a Figure 2 depicts the Reflexion Coefficient S11 of the
very promising solution. antenna. It is can be noticed from figure 2 that the bandwidth
limits are from 1.7 GHz to 10.1 GHz.
As UWB systems are characterized by a low emitted
power which degrades the performance of the UWB systems,
to surmount this limit, the MIMO technology which uses
multiple antennas in transmission and reception can be a
solution. Therefore, MIMO technology can be incorporated
with UWB systems to solve several drawbacks of UWB
systems such as the data rate which exceeds 1 Gbits/s for
Wireless Communications. But, the combination between
MIMO and UWB technology has the difficulty of isolation
between the radiating elements.
In the literature [1-11], several decoupling techniques are
studied to obtain high isolation; by orthogonally feeding [6,
7], introducing neutralization lines [10, 11], using stubs [8,
9], and insertion of Defected Ground Structure (DGS) [7]. (a)

In [2], an UWB monopole antenna designed, and a DGS

technique has been used to minimize the decoupling. The
antenna covers a band from 3.18 GHz to 11.5 GHz with an
isolation almost above 20 dB. Another UWB antenna has
been proposed in [11], an inverted-Y shaped stub has been
inserted, so the isolation has been enhanced more than 15 dB
only on the band [5-11] GHz (lower UWB). However, the
operating frequency range in [1] with neutralization line, is
[3.5-5] GHz even the isolation does not cover the entire
range [3.1-10.6] GHz.

Two designed UWB antennas are put together with a
distance 16.5 mm between them. The configuration of the (a)
two antennas is visible in figure 3. It is printed on the same

From figure 8, we note that the isolation between the two

radiation elements has been enhanced after using the
decoupling method, where the parameter S21 goes from -17
dB to -33 dB, so a gain of 16 dB, and from -22 dB to -50 dB
at 5 GHz, therefore a gain of 28 dB. The best decoupling
value is obtained for the 8 GHz, where the coefficient S21
goes from -20 dB to -53 dB, then a gain of 33 dB.

II. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

In order to ameliorate the isolation between the two
antennas, we have inserted a stub in the ground plane (Fig.
6). From S11 parameter shown in figure 7, we note that the
impedance bandwidth is [1.4-10.6] GHz, so the suggested
UWB MIMO antenna can cover the entire band from 3.1
GHz to 10.6 GHz. Moreover, the isolation coefficient is
above -16 dB over the entire functional bandwidth and
superior to -20 dB in majority of band, even it achieves -50
dB at 5 GHz and -53 dB at 8 GHz. Fig. 8 Comparison between the isolation before and after decoupling method.

Figure 9 may further insist that the decoupling method is

effective and that the isolation is improved. The excitement
of the port 1 shows that the maximum of current is on this
one. The stub act as a notch filter, which prevents this
current to attain the other unexcited antenna and therefore
reduces the mutual coupling between them.

CONCLUSION
In this work, a UWB MIMO antenna is presented. The
impedance bandwidth of the suggested system varied
from 1.4 to 10.6 GHz. By implementing a stub in the
ground plane, the performance in terms of isolation can be
enhanced significantly and the obtained results are in good
accord. This MIMO antenna thus promotes high speed
transmission
