Course Group theory is the study of groups. Groups are sets equipped with an operation (like multiplication, addition, or
Description composition) that satisfies certain basic properties. As the building blocks of abstract algebra, groups are so general
and fundamental that they arise in nearly every branch of mathematics and the sciences.
Course The objective of this course is to enable students to;
Objectives No. Course Objectives
1. Introducing the concept: group: subgroup, cyclic group.
2. Introducing the concepts: cosets, Langrange’s thorem.
3. Introducing the concepts: normalizer and centralizer,centre of a group.
4. Introducing the concepts: Normal subgroups,conjugacy relation in groups.
5. Introducing the concepts: isomorphism, automorphism and inner
automorphism, group of permutation. Cayley’s theorems.
At the end of this course students will be able to;
No. Course Outcomes
1. Students will be able to define algebraic structures.
2. Verify group properties in particular examples
3. Recall and use the definitions and properties of dihedral, symmetric groups.
4. Demonstrate accurate and efficient use of advanced algebraic techniques.
Course 5. decide whether a given group is cyclic, and given a finite cyclic group, find a
Learning generator for a subgroup of a given order.
Outcomes 6. Know how to calculate with permutations.
(CLO) 7. Students will be able to state the fundamental theorem of finite abelian
groups.
8. Use the concepts of isomorphism and homomorphism for groups.
9. Analyze and demonstrate examples of Normalizer, centralizer and normal
subgroups.
10. Be able to explain and prove Cayley's and Lagrange's theorem of elementary gro
up theory.
Teaching The theory is dealt with in lectures and office hours.
Methodology Assignments, Quizzes, Presentations, Midterm Exam and Final Term Exam.
