OF FILIPINO SUBJECT IN COLLEGE

Jazcel P. Burce

BSE-English 106
Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know student’s perceptions of the pending removal of
the Filipino subject in college among high school students, with the goal of
determining high school students' perspectives on the pending removal of the Filipino
as a core subject in college, as well as the reasons for their positions, whether in favor
or against the removal. An in-depth interview with the participants was employed in
this study to acquire a description of their lived experience using a qualitative
phenomenological approach. The method allows researchers to delve into and
examine the significance of shared experiences, as well as produce themes, in order to
achieve a conclusion for a larger group.Furthermore, it was discovered that the high
school is aware of the planned withdrawal of Filipino as a college core subject. The
participants expressed their support for or opposition to the removal of the Filipinos.
Because it is taught from elementary school through high school, the participants are
in favor. Those who are against it responded that Filipino is an important subject in
college since it will lead to students' lack of understanding and a loss of respect for
the language, as well as the culture and heritage it brings.

Introduction

Language has always been a key component of communication. It is, however, more
than just a medium of communication; it represents the nation's unity and defines the
nation's identity and people. It is a medium that promotes friendship, strengthens
cultural links, and strengthens economic ties. The mother tongue provides as a link
between diverse ethnic groups across a country, encouraging literacy, dexterity, and
critical thinking. The Filipino language, like all languages, is evolving with the
passage of time. It continues to develop and evolve in response to global trends, with
the addition of 12 new terms to the Filipino vocabulary and the emergence of many
dialects. The Filipino language is also used in other subjects to teach students about
the subject. Despite teaching a subject that is taught in English, some teachers can't
help but speak in Filipino. Additionally, it allows students to readily comprehend and
absorb the lectures.
The Filipino language makes communication between students and teachers simple
and straightforward. Although some words are difficult to translate into Filipino, the
supporting information
allow students to provide their own interpretations, allowing them to grasp the
significance and substance of the subject.

In the K-12 curriculum, the Filipino is part of the subjects being taught to grade 11
and 12 students. With this in mind, the CHED aims to remove the subject in college
affecting the students, as well as, the Filipino teachers. This, in turn, affects the
teachers financially for it would lead to losing their jobs. CHED has listed probable
solutions for the affected teachers like giving them sufficient training to teach a new
set of General Education courses to evade the possible removal of their jobs.
However, it impacts them as mentors of their language and culture. This issue not
only affects the teachers because of the removal of the subject in colleges. The idea of
removing the subject Filipino greatly affects the country in all of its aspects. This is
not only a single challenge regarding a student’s education but it also involves the
identity of a person as they grow up. According to a news from ABS-CBN, Solicitor
General Jose Calida agrees to remove the Filipino. According to him, removing the
Filipino as 13 a subject is reasonable and practical for it is already included in the K-
12 Basic Education Curriculum. Aside from this, the CHED has the authority to
decide which subjects can be included for the general curriculum. Nevertheless,
despite all of the ideas about removing the said subject, there are many people against
the notion. One of these are some students and teachers. From Cabreza’s report in
Tonite Abante, the students and teachers from the University of the Philippines (UP)
rallied inside the compound of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon
City. It was led by the Department of the Filipino at Panitikan of the Philippines in
General Education Curriculum in college. Some student and teacher shared their
opinions about removing the Filipino at Panitikan as a subject. From Jaladoni’s report
in ABS-CBN News, Ledesma, a student, said that this subjects will mold them to
become a global citizen and to be a proud Filipino. According to Dr. David Michael
San Juan, coordinator of the Community Engagement Filipino Department and
professor at De La Salle University-Manila (DLSU), the Filipino subject that is taught
on Senior High School Students focuses merely on writing while the Filipino subject
in College focuses on writing as well as reading. Moreover, the Filipino language was
approved as the national language last 1935. It has not yet reached 100 years, yet the
subject involved is wanted to be excluded from the curriculum. In addition, Marvin
Lai, the chairman of the Department of Filipinology from the Polytechnic University
of the Philippines (PUP), said that the Filipino teachers believed that the Filipino
language is the language of intellectual people. People will not be able to 14 realize
that the Filipino language is the key to shaping and molding their understanding if
they are not able to express their own selves using the Filipino language.

The purpose of this research is to explain, provide, and demonstrate the many
perspectives of high school students on the approaching removal of the Filipino
course in college in order to fully appreciate their views on the matter. The general
purpose of the research is to come to a conclusion on the diverse perspectives of the
high school student on the pending removal of the Filipino subject in College.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter comprises the design of research outlining the research strategy, method
and approach. It also includes the procedures and instruments used in gathering data,
the description of the participants, the selection of the selection and the research
sampling process and techniques. Research Design In this study, the researchers used
a qualitative transcendental phenomenological approach. The transcendental
phenomenological approach applied in this study focuses on the participants’ given
descriptions to generate a principle of the lived experiences. This approach enables
the researchers to obtain the description of the participants lived experience by means
of having an in-depth interview with them. The researchers will understand how these
people experience and perceive a particular situation, which in this case is the pending
removal of the Filipino subject as a core subject in college. The approach allows to
delve and analyze the meanings behind the shared experiences and generate themes in
order to reach a conclusion for a greater population. Methods of Data Collection This
qualitative transcendental phenomenology research uses a semi-structured interview.
This inquiry is a non-standardized one and applicable for qualitative analysis. 38
Open-ended questions are asked in order to let the participants explain their answers.
Since it is a non-standardized interview, the verbal exchange between the researcher
and the participants gives way to exploring new possible answers through probing.
Although, guide questions are prepared beforehand, the researchers are free to take a
different course of questions and ask additional questions in order to encourage
elaboration and clarify responses to comprehend the description of the lived
experience and their perceptions about it. In addition, the interview will be less formal
making the participant more comfortable in giving natural answers that will provide
good foundation for the research. Despite being an interview, observations are going
to be conducted. Body languages, facial gestures and the like will be observed and
analyzed for these motions have meanings behind that will help in understanding their
answers. The interviews are going to be audiotaped for accuracy and reference,
unless the participant wishes not be filmed. However, their answers will be written.
After the interview, the audios recorded are going to be written in verbatim
transcripts.

OBJECTIVE

Filipino is a crucial subject for anyone to learn more about our own language. It's also
a significant symbol for the devotion to our culture and country. The Filipino subject
is a fantastic way to study the Filipino language and bring Filipinos together.
Unfortunately, the Department of Education has announced that Filipino would be
phased out of tertiary education by 2018. Patriotism can be demonstrated through
studying Filipino subjects. Taking Filipino subjects out of curriculums is neither just
nor just because it is a clear violation of the national language, teachers will lose their
jobs, and other organizations will protest.

This study is conducted to know the perception of the high school students regarding
the removal of Filipino subject. Filipino subjects are an important part of the
curriculum. Students understand the basics of the Filipino language in this class,
which helps everyone appreciate the subject. It emphasizes the necessity of Filipino
persons studying their native tongue. Students are also encouraged to read Philippine
literature. Students are also taught how to enhance their skills in composing poetry,
songs, stories, and other types of works in the language.Students speaking their native
language and another language enables them to integrate the different beliefs and
cultures each language treasures. It allows them to reflect upon it and be more open
minded to the different views that stem from these cultures. (The Importance of
Preserving and Promoting Languages: A Liberal Arts Perspective, 2017).

A. 5
T: >Are you aware about S1: I’ve already watched
the news of the pending this series of time. And
removal of the Filipino at yes, I am aware of the
Panitikan as a core existing memorandum
subject in college?< regarding the removal of
the Filipino at Panitikan as
core subjects for college.
(0.2)

S2: <Kung alam ko ba ang

balitang ito, syempre oo
naman. Dahil isa ito sa
mga malaking isyu lalo na
patungkol ito sa Filipino at
Panitikan.>

S3: Yes po.(!)

S4: Yes I am aware.

S5: Yeah.(!) <I am aware

of that.>

T: <What is your opinion 5

about the pending S1: When it comes to the
removal of the Filipino at removal. I might say that
Panitikan as a core there is an incident where
subject in college?> I'm not sure how this was
provided. Because we're
talking about college, this
is the Commission on
Higher Education. So, I'm
not sure how they
presented that particular
component. How they held
talks about the Filipino
subject's impending
departure.(0.2)

S2: Ok. Gaya nga ng

nabasa ko dito ay
nabanggit dito na ang
Filipino ay core subject.
Ibig sabihin kung ating
isasalin ito, isa ito sa mga
mahalagang asignatura. So
doon sa tanong na
pagtatanggal ng Filipino
sa asignatura sa kolehiyo,
siyempre isa ‘yang
malaking usapin.(0.3)
Mayroon kasing iba’t
ibang mga bahagi na pag-
aaral ng Filipino na
naituturo lamang sa
kolehiyo. So ‘yon yung isa
sa talagang
nakapagpagimbal doon sa
mga guro at lalo na din sa
mga iba’t ibang mag-aaral.
(.hhh)

S3: As a student my
opinion on the removal of
Filipino subject in college,
(.hhh) I am not in favor in
this because, there is so
much possible things that
we must consider. Para sa
akin lang naman, una ang
mga guro na may mga
husay sa nasabing
asignatura ay mawawalan
ng trabaho o maaaring
mawawalan ng trabaho.
Pangalawa, marami din
namang estudyante ang
makukulangan ng
kaalaman patungkol sa
asignaturang nais nilang
alisin.(0.3)

S4: In the Philippines...

For example, in the field
of Filipino at the
undergraduate level: high
school level. I believe it is
a sufficient basis for
students who are interested
in pursuing a career in the
field of Filipino, namely in
the field of teaching
Filipino. (0.2)As a result,
<I believe college will
become obsolete. Filipino
would be a redundant
course in a college
curriculum. So I believe I
am in favor of Filipino
being removed from the
college curriculum, but
because Filipino is taught
from kindergarten through
high school, I believe
that... That will be more
than enough foundational
or background material for
the kids.>

S5: Actually, I agree that

Filipino course should not
be taught in college or as a
core subject. I believe that
learning Filipino during
their elementary and
secondary school years
will provide them with
sufficient knowledge of
our Panitikan and Filipino.
(.hhh)

T: <What is your S1: This in my opinion, 5

standpoint on this issue? will be a loophole, just
Why do you say so?> like any other Filipino and
any other professional who
has dealt with this Filipino
and Panitikan when I was
in college. And it's also a
setback for the college's
curriculum, because
Panitikan and Filipino
topics are both desperately
required, not only because
they relate to a specific
subject, but also because
they contain literature that
instills our Filipino values
and culture in us.(0.3)

S2:So, dahil nga isa sa

itong malaking isyu para
sa amin, gaya ng
nabanggit ko kanina. May
mga tanong at maaaring
ang mga magaaral na
katulad niyo rin kung bakit
nagkaroon ng ganitong
memorandum ang
gobyerno.(.hhh) So, if
nagkaroon ng ganitong
memorandum, isa lang
naman yung tanong ng
halos lahat sa atin. And,
more importantly, bakit
kinakailangan ang Filipino
at Panitikan sa kolehiyo?
I'm a great fan of isang
halimbawa. Rizal, Ang.
Rizal's subject is higit na
itinuturo at pinapalawak in
the classroom. Even if
Noli and Fili were to
attend junior high school,
iba pa rin yung pag-
aaralan mo yung sa likod
ng buhay ni Rizal.(0.3)
Ok. Papaano na ang mga
mag-aaral kung
tatanggalin natin ang
Filipino at Panitikan sa
kolehiyo? Yung mga
punto at yung mga
talakayan na dapat ay
itinuturo ng malaliman sa
kolehiyo, hindi nila
malalaman. So itong isyu
na ito ay medyo
kwestyonable para sa akin.
(0.2) Ito ay memorandum,
at alam natin na hindi
naman mabubuo ang isang
memorandum kung
dahilan. However, bakit
nabuo at ano na ang
mangyayari sa Filipino at
Panitikan kung ito ay
tatanggalin sa kolehiyo
ang kwestyon lang dito? Is
it mabababa sa junior
high? Mapupunta saan?
Ituturo papaano? Ang
unang tanong ayon.
Question. So, yes, dun sa
perspective. Siguro kung
ako, hindi siyempre.(0.3)
Hindi pa rin approve na
tanggalin ang Filipino
subject lalo na yung
Filipino at Panitikan sa
kolehiyo. Siguro pwede
niyong idagdag diyan na
may… marami pang
literatura na hindi
naituturo sa mababang
antas na sa kolehiyo
itinuturo katulad nga ng
Rizal.(.hhh)

S3: Hindi pabor!

S4: In favor of removal sa

college.

S5:As I already stated, I

support the elimination of
Panitikan and Filipino
from college courses. I
believe that we need to
empower more in offering
our education... in
expanding our curriculum
in both grade school and
junior high school so that
college students will focus
more on activities or
subjects that will increase
their skills in real-life
situations.(hhh)

T: >How does this issue 5

affect you?< S1: I believe that this has
a significant impact on
how we deal with the local
language we have since,
while we recognize the
international language, we
also have the Korean
language being applied in
public and private schools,
making this a major
issue(0.3). Particularly
with the Panitikan,
teachers and professors are
baffled as to how they
might bring out the locale
and heritage of the
Filipino language as it
exists today(0.2).

S2:So, nagulat ako nung

napanood ko at narinig
ang mga balitang ito
siyempre. (.hhh) Okay!
siyempre akong mga
komento at bagay-bagay
sa aking isip nang marinig
ko, papaano na yung mga
guro nagtuturo sa kolehiyo
lalu na sa asignaturang ito
una sa lahat siyempre.(0.2)
At papaano naman yung
mga mag-aaral na
kumukuha ng kolehiyo?
So, nakaaapekto siya sa
ating sariling wika, dahil
nga kung susuriin mo nga,
nagkakaroon pa sa ibang
bansa at bagay sa bansang
Japan.(.hhh)
So, if ikaw ay isang turista
o dayuhan sa kanilang
sariling bayan, ikaw ay
magaral ng kanilang
lengguwahe at hindi sila
ang maga-adjust para sa
iyo. Ito kasing Filipino at
Panitikan isa ito sa mga
yaman ng Pilipinas. If
ikaw, tatanggalin mo ito at
hindi mo lilinawin kung
saang bahagi mo siya
dadalhin o kung saan siya
bahagi ng mga magaaral
mapupunta parang binaba
natin yung pagappahalaga
natin.(0.3)May mga
pagpapalawak na
ginagawa sa Filipino sa
kolehiyo naituturo sa
junior high school o doon
sa mas mababa pang antas
ng pagaaral, gaya ng
sinabi ko.

S3: Malaking epekto ito

para sa aming mag aaral
sapagkat sa pamamagitan
ng pag aaral ng Filipino
mas nakakatulong ito
upang mas lalo pang mapa
unlad ang pag aaral ng
sariling wika natin.(.hhh)

S4:Not much! The

Filipinos will be affected
by this measure or
whatever it is called.

S5: Certainly, schools and

academia are affected, as
are we all. Because it is
part of our curriculum, any
modifications would have
a significant impact on the
school and all of the
teachers.(0.2) Even though
I do not teach Filipino, the
school as a whole would
be impacted by the
changes.

T: >In your opinion, who 5

do you think is the most S1: when it comes to
affected? The teachers or learning, kids are far more
the students? Why?< affected. The professors
are aware of how to
deliberate or discuss
particular Filipino
language or lessons, as
well as what the students
do not understand. When it
comes to Filipino, they
don't know what sort of
Filipino this is, or what
kind of language this is.
As a result, I believe that
students are the ones who
are most harmed by this
removal. If the Filipino
language were to be
removed from the list.(0.3)

S2: So kung matatanggal

nga ito, sino ang
pinakalugi, siyempre para
sa akin mas apektado ang
mga magaaral. When
tatanggalin natin ang
Filipino sa kolehiyo, kasi
paano nila makukuha yung
mga impormasyon at mga
kaalaman na dapat nilang
makuha sa kolehiyo?(0.2)
Ang wika ay nagiging
patay kapag hindi
ginagamit. Balang araw
ang wikang Filipino
maaring maglaho na, ibig
sabihin kung walang
pagpapalawak, walang
paggamit, at walang
pagpapahalaga siyempre.
Hindi naman naituturo
nang pamalagian ang
baybayin sa mas
mababang antas. Ang
buhay ni Rizal, ang buhay
ni Balagtas, kahit sa
Philippine History, hindi
naituturo.(hhh) Mayroong
isyu na tatanggalin ang
Philippine History. So!
papaano na lang ang
Panitikan ng Pilipinas at
tinuturo ng higit sa
kolehiyo ang Philippine
Literature.

S3: Ang más apektado sa

sitwasyong ito ay ang mga
mag-aaral o ang mga
estudyante sa aking
palagay. Ang mga guro
naman ay maaaring
makapag-aral muli at
magturo ng panibagong
subject, kung sa mga guro
naman ay maaaring
makapag-aral muli at
magturo ng panibagong
subject.(hhh)Ang mga
kabataan na siyang
tatanggap ng kaalaman
mula sa mga guro, on the
other hand, ay
mababawasan ng
kalinangan na kailangan at
kaalaman patungo sa
nasabing asignatura.(0.2)

S4: I believe the teachers

will be more affected than
the kids since, as I
previously stated, Filipino
is taught beginning in
grade one and continues
through high school. By
that time, the Filipino
college teachers will have
lost their jobs, therefore.
They will most likely
concentrate on educating
undergraduates.(.hhh)

S5: These challenges, I

believe would have a
greater impact on students
because they focus on
conveying knowledge.
Because they all receive,
students are all receivers.
(0.2)

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Most teachers are aware of the impending loss of the Filipino topic, they have
differing perspectives on the matter. Three of the attendees are opposed to the Filipino
issue being removed. Two of them are in support of it being removed. The three
individuals who are against the removal believe that Filipino and Panitikan are vital
subjects that should be studied in college. In college, Filipino and 46 Panitikan
courses are taught in depth, with a focus on the country's mother tongue's locality.

While the two participants who are in support of the elimination argue that the lessons
to be covered in this topic will merely be redundant in college. Several articles present
various perspectives from various parties on the removal of the Filipino and Panitikan
as a core subject. To minimize duplication, the CHEd and the Supreme Court want the
topic eliminated from college. (Cruz, 2014). The faculty is opposed to it because of its
significance and the loss of culture and legacy.
Because this is a curriculum issue, four of the participants responded that the removal
of Filipino and Panitikan as a fundamental topic in college will effect them by
bringing out the language's location and resulting in less knowledge for students. One
of the participants, on the other hand, stated that they are unaffected because they are
not Filipino teachers. Because of the participants' differing perspectives, the
researchers wish to learn more about their insights and the reasons behind their
choices. Teachers who oppose the removal argue that it poses a significant threat to
the educational program. It will affect the knowledge of the students regarding the
Filipino and Panitikan since some of the lessons are only taught in college. The
teachers who support the elimination argue that the subjects will be duplicated and
that the foundation of information they obtained in elementary and secondary school
is sufficient. Teachers, on the other hand, may lose their jobs as a result.
