Motivation Question

What are the works of a

Mechanical Engineer? Is this
profession had a huge impact on
today’s modernization?
Who are Mechanical Engineers?
The field of mechanical engineering has its application in the design, analysis,
manufacture, and maintenance of different mechanical systems. It uses the principle
of physics, mathematics, and material science. It is considered as the oldest and
broadest among the engineering disciplines.
Who are Mechanical Engineers?
Mechanical engineers are known for their broad scope of expertise and working on
different types of machinery. As defined in the US Department of Labor, mechanical
engineers perform research, design, develop, manufacture, and test different tools,
machines, and other mechanical devices. Mechanical engineers work on power-
producing machines and develop power using machines.
Mechanical Systems
Mechanical systems were defined in Section 3 of RA 8495 known as the act regulating
the practice of mechanical engineering in the Philippines. The definition of mechanical
systems includes the following:
Mechanical equipment or machinery–
includes all prime movers such as:
1. Steam Engines and Turbines
2. Internal Combustion Engines
3. Gas engines and turbines
4. Steam generators such as boiler
5. Furnaces
6. Heat exchanger such as cooling towers
7. Kilns and dryers coolers and heaters
8. Materials handling equipment such as pumps, cranes, Steam Engines and Turbines
conveyors, hoists, elevators, escalators, mechanized
dumbwaiters, moving ramps and walkways:

Major Achievements in Mechanical Engineering

The Automobile. The invention of the automobile was considered as the most significant
achievement of the profession during the 20th century. We can explain the impact of this
achievement to the society. Nicolaus Otto, a German engineer was behind in the design of the
four-stroke internal combustion engine.
Major Achievements in Mechanical Engineering

The Apollo program. The program has realized the objective to land on the Moon and returns safely to
earth. The program was composed of a three-man crew of Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz
Aldrin. The program was considered as the second most influential achievement of the 20 th century
because of the technological advances involved.
Major Achievements in Mechanical Engineering

Power generation. The concept of mechanical engineering is to design types of machinery and equipment
that converts one form of energy to another. One of the most important achievements of mechanical
engineers in this concept is the generation of power in the form of electricity. This power generation has
contributed to economic growth and has improved the standard of living. Nowadays mechanical engineers
have the challenge to improve the use of existing renewable and sustainable sources such as wave, solar,
and wind.
