4
WHAT IS IT

Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in

the communication process.
Listening is key to all effective communication. Without the ability to
listen effectively, messages are easily misunderstood. As a result,
communication breaks down and the sender of the message can easily
become frustrated or irritated.
If there is one communication skill you should aim to master, then
listening it is.
Good listening skills also have benefits in our personal lives,
including: a greater number of friends and social networks, improved self-
esteem and confidence, higher grades at school and in academic work, and
even better health and general well-being.
Studies have shown that, whereas speaking raises blood pressure,
attentive listening can bring it down.
Listening, however, requires more than that; it requires focus and
concentrated effort, both mental and sometimes physical as well.
Listening means paying attention not only to the story, but how it is
told, the use of language and voice, and how the other person uses his or
her body. In other words, it means being aware of both verbal and non-
verbal messages. Your ability to listen effectively depends on the degree to
which you perceive and understand these messages.
Listening is not a passive process. In fact, the listener can, and
should, be at least as engaged in the process as the speaker. The phrase
‘active listening’ is used to describe this process of being fully involved.
'Active listening' means, as its name suggests, actively listening.
That is fully concentrating on what is being said rather than just passively
‘hearing’ the message of the speaker.
Active listening involves listening with all senses. As well as giving full
attention to the speaker, it is important that the ‘active listener’ is also ‘seen’
to be listening - otherwise the speaker may conclude that what they are
talking about is uninteresting to the listener.
Interest can be conveyed to the speaker by using both verbal and non-
verbal messages such as maintaining eye contact, nodding your head and
smiling, agreeing by saying ‘Yes’ or simply ‘Mmm hmm’ to encourage them to
continue. By providing this 'feedback' the person speaking will usually feel
more at ease and therefore communicate more easily, openly and honestly.

notebook.

ANNEX 1

Paraiso
Smokey Mountain

Return to a land called paraiso

A place where a dying river ends
No birds there fly over paraiso
No space allows them to endure
The smoke that screens the air
The grass that's never there
And if I could see a single bird, what a joy
I try to write some words and create
A simple song to be heard
By the rest of the world
I live in this land called paraiso
In a house made of cardboard floors and walls
I learned to be free in paraiso
Free to claim anything I see
Matching rags for my clothes
Plastic bags for the cold
And if empty cans were all I have, what a joy
I never fight to take someone
Else's coins and live with fear
Like the rest of the boys
Paraiso, help me make a stand
Paraiso, take me by the hand
Paraiso, make the world understand

ANNEX 2

Let It Go
Idina Menzel

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight

Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I'm the queen
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I've tried
Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know
Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don't care what they're going to say
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway
Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
Let it go (go, go, go go, go go, go go, go, go, go go)
Let it go
Let it go
Let it go

ANNEX 3

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that may cause respiratory

illnesses in humans ranging from common colds to more severe conditions
such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle Eastern
Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).
'Novel coronavirus' is a new, previously unidentified strain of
coronavirus. The novel coronavirus involved in the current outbreak has
been named SARS-CoV-2 by the World Health Organization (WHO). 3The
disease it causes has been named “coronavirus disease 2019” (or “COVID-
19”).
COVID-19 can spread from person to person usually through close
contact with an infected person or through respiratory droplets that are
dispersed into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.3 It may
also be possible to get the virus by touching a surface or object
contaminated with the virus and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes,
but it is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
As of the March 6, 2020, there are over 95,000 confirmed cases of
infection by the virus—and 3,381 of that number have resulted in death.
While most cases of COVID-19 infection are in China, the virus has spread
to 88 other countries.

What a Wonderful World

Ledisi

I see trees of green, red roses too

I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands, saying how do you do
They're only saying I love you
I see babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn so much more than I'll ever know
Then I think to myself what a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
