v
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Dear Learners!

This is another opportunity for you to learn another set of lesson. This
may be one of the lessons that confused you, or it might be a refresher for
you. Indeed, it’s a delight to teach you about Direct and Indirect Speech.

Have you listened to someone say something and you need to report it
to another person? How were you able to tell it to that person? Well, today,
this is an avenue for you to learn about that.

Moreover, this will be very helpful in your everyday conversations, as

well as, your written compositions. Be mindful of what you would learn
today to effectively address the need for a better communication towards
your friends, schoolmates, teachers and more.

So, heads up! Keep your focus as you go through this lesson. I
fervently hope that this could bring light to all your queries about this topic.

WHAT’S NEW

There you go! Two down!

Now, you’ll be able to grasp about Indirect and Reported Speech.

Unknowingly, you have been using these all throughout. However, you
weren’t able, or you may recognize these based on your prior knowledge.

This may be one of the neglected lessons, yet this is so significant

when used in conversations or compositions. Remember, this could be a big
help in a more meaningful and comprehensible conversation.

To be able to learn about how to identify Direct and Indirect speeches,

you shall be guided on the next one.

WHAT IS IT

A Direct Speech is a sentence that gives a statement or thought in its

original form according to how the original speaker said it.

Example: “He planted rice in our land,” replied Pare Crispin.

“Many men like to borrow rice from me,” Mang Cesar said.

A Reported Speech is a sentence that expresses the content of a statement

without quoting just like what is done in direct speech.

Example: Pare Crispin replied that he planted rice in their land.

Mang Cesar said that many men like to borrow rice from him.

To change a direct speech to a reported speech and vice versa, you need to
take note of the following important details:

Tense of the Verb (Is it in past tense or present tense?)

If the reported verb in the direct speech is in the present tense or

future tense, then no changes are required to be made in the verb of
reported speech. This verb could be in any tense i.e., present, past, or
future.

5
For Example:

Direct Speech: He says, “I am ill.”

Reported Speech: He says that he is ill.

Direct Speech: She says, “She sang a song.”

Reported Speech: She says that she sang a song.

Direct Speech: You say, “I shall visit London.”

Reported Speech: You say that you will visit London.

If the reporting verb is in past tense, then reported verb will be

changed as per the following criterion:

Direct Speech: They said, “They take exercise every day.”

Reported Speech: They said that they took exercise every day.

Present Perfect is changed into the past perfect tense.

Direct Speech: They said, “They have taken exercise.”

Reported Speech: They said that they had taken exercise.

No changes are required to be made into past perfect tense.

Direct Speech: They said, “They had taken exercise.”

Reported Speech: They said that they had taken exercise.

Important Words to Change (Do you need to change pronouns like “I”
to “He/She” ?)

I----- He/ She

This ---- That

These----- Those

Here------ There

Now----- Then

Today----- That Day

6
Yesterday---- The Previous Day

Tomorrow----- Following Day/ Next Day

Tonight------ That night
