WHAT’S NEW

That must have been a difficult yet rewarding accomplishment for

you.

Now, I want you to go back to the activities that you went through
actively. READ and take your time to get the important points about this
lesson on ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE OF VERBS.

Remember, Voice is the term used to describe whether a verb is active

or passive. The voice of a verb tells us whether the subject is acting or being
acted upon. Like, when the subject of the verb is doing the action of the
verb (e.g., "The dog bit the postman."), the verb is said to be in the
active voice.

What makes this lesson so effective is its ability to get you to think
critically, since there is an accurate answer because incorrect grammar will
always be wrong.

To be able to get to the correct answer, you need to use your

analytical skills and follow the rules strictly. In this instance, you must
think about how the verbs in the active voice will change when they are
transformed to the passive voice.

It is, therefore, expected that you remember and make use of the
rules correctly to guide you to the correct answer.

4
WHAT IS IT

The voice of an action verb indicates whether the subject performs or

receives the action. There are two types of voice:

ACTIVE VOICE

When the subject does or “acts upon” the verb, the sentence is said to be in
the active voice.
Formula: Subject + Verb+ Object
(doer of the action)
Study the following examples. These show that the subject is doing the
verb’s actions.

1. The rich man’s servant (subject) usually cooked (verb) special food
(object).
2. Carlos Bulosan (subject) revealed (verb) the reality about social
discrimination in the text (object).

PASSIVE VOICE

When the subject receives the action of the verb, the sentence is said to be
in the passive voice.
Formula: Subject + Verb+ Object
(receiver of the action)
The following examples show how the subject-verb relationship has
changed.
1. Special food (subject) is usually cooked (verb) by the rich man’s
servant (object).
(active verb – cooked : passive verb - is cooked)

2. The reality about social discrimination in the text

(subject) was revealed (verb) by Carlos Bulosan (object).
(active verb – revealed : passive verb - was revealed)
English 7 Learner’s Material , pp. 379-380

5
In ACTIVE VOICE sentences, the subject does the action.

Sentence structure: subject + action verb + object receiving the action.

Examples:
1. Dogs bury bones. Who bury bones? - Dogs.
2. Sandy takes cupcakes each Monday.
Who takes cupcakes every Monday? -Sandy
In PASSIVE VOICE sentences, the subject receives the action.
Sentence structure: subject + (auxiliary verb + past participle) +
object doing the action.
Examples:
1. Bones are buried by dogs. What are buried by dogs? Bones
2. Cupcakes are taken by Sandy each Monday.

What are taken by Sandy each Monday? Cupcakes
