v
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Hey there! I hope you are feeling ecstatic and eager to learn something new!
Today, we will learn something about conditionals and using them in expressing
arguments.

In our daily interactions with people, fostering good communication in

getting one’s meaning across is vital. The key to effective communication lies within
the construction of words in forming well-founded statements. Skills such as
explaining information, reasoning out one’s point and even stating an argument are
some of the many abilities that contribute to one’s communicative capabilities. Let
us affix our focus on the skill of using conditional statements in expressing
arguments.

The term “conditional”, from the term, means stating conditions. Using
conditionals effectively will take us a long way in distinguishing and finding truths:
knowing when to believe that the information given is accurate or false. And when
we fully realize this, the need to feed ourselves with the necessary tools and
techniques in forming powerful and substantial arguments is intensified.

This module provides information about conditionals: its meaning, types and
examples. Furthermore, it also explains how conditionals can be used in expressing
arguments. Also, attached herein are some exercises that will help you more in
understanding the topic fully.

3
WHAT’S NEW

Good job! Now, let us go to an in depth understanding of the lesson.

READ and take your time to get the important points about this lesson on
CONDITIONALS USED TO EXPRESS ARGUMENTS.

CONDITIONALS describe the result of something that might happen

(in the present or future) or might have happened but didn’t (in the past).
They are made using a variety of English verb tenses.

Source: https://www.perfect-english-grammar.com/conditionals.html

WHAT IS IT

There are three types of conditionals. These are:

A. Conditional Sentence Type 1:

→ It is possible and very likely that the condition will be fulfilled.

Form: If + Simple Present >>> Future (= will + bare infinitive)

Example: If I find her address, I’ll send her an invitation.

B. Conditional Sentence Type 2:

→ It is possible but very unlikely, that the condition will be fulfilled.

Form: if + Simple Past >>> Conditional (= would + bare infinitive)

Example: If I found her address, I would send her an invitation.

4
C. Conditional Sentence Type 3:

→ It is impossible that the condition will be fulfilled because it refers

to the past.

Form: if + Past Perfect, Conditional II (= would + have + Past

Participle)

Example: If I had found her address, I would have sent her an

invitation.

WHAT IS AN ARGUMENT?

Argument: a sequence of two or more statements of which one is designated

as the conclusion and all the others of which are premises.

Examples:

a. Because junk food is bad for your health, the size of sodas offered art
fast-food restaurants should be regulated by the federal government.
b. Penguins should not be kept in zoos because captivity affects their
psychological and physical well-being.
c. Illegal drug use is detrimental because it encourages gang violence.

TURNING CONDITIONAL STATEMENTS INTO ARGUMENTS

• It is possible to turn a conditional statement into an argument if you

change the way it is formed.
• Taking the antecedent (the first part) of a conditional statement and
saying it is true will make it into an argument, since the statement
now has a premise and a conclusion

Ex.

• Conditional statement- “If Arnold Schwarzenegger was born a citizen

of Austria, then he cannot be elected president of the United States.”
• Argument form- Arnold Schwarzenegger was born a citizen of Austria.
Therefore, he cannot be elected president of the United States

(Conditionals as parts of arguments)

• If you study, then you’ll pass. If you pass, then you’ll graduate.
Therefore, if you study, you’ll graduate.
• If a number is even, then it’s divisible by 2 without a remainder. 4 is
divisible by 2 without a remainder. Therefore, 4 is even.
