Welcome to the ENGLISH 8 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on


Using Opinion-Marking Signals!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by


educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the
teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore,
this also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Hello to you my dear student! How are you? You have done great job
for the past weeks so far. I am so proud of you! Just continue and keep up
the good start. Today, you are to deal with opinion-marking signals in
sharing your ideas both in written and spoken texts. It is designed in order
for you to know what opinion markings are, their purpose and usage.

Using opinion-marking signals in sharing your ideas is a great help for


you especially in taking a stand in an argument. It will allow you to express
your opinions on a certain topic properly and formally.

In this module, you will complete series of activities and have


opportunities to practice using opinion marking signals in sentences and
even in paragraph writing. Through these, you will be able to use opinion
markings in sharing your ideas correctly.

Task 1: Read the following interaction in a Science class.

The Science class is discussing the nature and formation of rainbows.

Mr. Alberto: What is a rainbow and when and where can you see one?

Jesryl: A rainbow is an arc of bright colors that is sometimes seen in the


sky after a rain or in mist of a waterfall. It is seen only when the sun is
shining against a passing shower or in the mist that rises from a waterfall. A
rainbow appears in the part of the sky that is opposite to the sun.

Mr. Alberto: Very good! Now, what beliefs about rainbows do you know?

Gidan: Sir, primitive people thought that rainbows are special signs put by
the gods in the sky to tell people when terrible wars or storms would
happen.

Mecca: Some people once believed that the gods made rainbows to stop the
rain from falling when it was not needed.
Mr. Alberto: Do you think these beliefs are true Angel?

Angel: I don’t think so Sir. Although, I heard some people say that if one
could travel at the end of the rainbow, he would find a pot of gold.

Now, given some statements from the conversation, classify them
whether a fact or an opinion. Use the table presented.

Task 2

Read the dialogue in the box carefully. Take note of the words/signals in
giving opinions. Then answer the questions that follow.

Angela: I’m thinking of buying my own house.


Caleb: Oh, that’s great!
Angela: But I can’t decide where. Should I live in the city or in the province?
Caleb: In my opinion, you should buy an apartment in the city.
Angela: But why?
Caleb: Life in the city is more fun and more convenient.
Angela: Yeah, I know. But I think life in the province is healthier compared
to the life in the city.
Caleb: It seems to me that there are no excitements in the province.
Angela: I don’t think so. I think life in the province is exciting and
adventurous.
Caleb: Ok, then I’ll support you.

What Are Opinion-Marking Signals?

Opinion-marking signals are usually found in the beginning of a


sentence and is used in introducing your personal point of view, in a
specific time with your own perspective and style about a topic that
will complement the sentence.

Examples of Opinion-Marking Signals:

1. Expressing Personal Opinion

- In my experience…
- As far as I’m concern…
- I believe that…
- I’d like to point out that…

Example:

I think the library should be open longer. (Then provide reasons and
evidence to support your opinion)

It closes at 8 PM and I usually study until 10 PM which means I


have to find a new place to go.

2. Expressing General Opinion

- Some people say that…


- It is generally accepted that….
- Many people say that…

Example:

Many people say that he is a bad leader.


(Then provide reasons and evidence to support your opinion)
He doesn’t listen to our suggestions.

3. Responding to Opinion

In responding to an opinion, you can agree or disagree to a certain


issue.

Agreeing to an Opinion:

- Of course…
- You’re absolutely right…
- Yes, I agree…
- That’s a good point…
- Exactly!
- That’s true!
- I’d go along with that…

Example:
Yes, I Agree that she is beautiful.
Of course, she is!
You’re absolutely right that she is beautiful.

Disagreeing to an Opinion:

- I don’t agree with you…


- I’m sorry to disagree with you, but…
- Yes, but don’t you think…
- I’m not so sure about that…
- That’s not the same thing…

Example:

I’m sorry to disagree with you but I don’t think that’s the right thing
to do.
That’s not the same thing I have seen on television.
