v
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

How often do you read? Do you read for information, entertainment or

simply your pastime? Reading is important because it develops the mind.
Understanding the written word is one way the mind grows in its ability. Learning
to read is about listening and understanding as well as working out what is printed
on the page. Reading helps develop the mind and imagination and the creative side
of a person. It helps to improve (vocabulary and spelling) communication both
written and spoken. It plays an important part in building a good self-image. It is a
function that is necessary in today's society.

When you read, not only you are improving memory and empathy, but
research has shown that it can make readers feel better and more positive too.
Through reading, one can easily know sounds, words and language even at an
early literacy stage. It is considered exercise of the brain, it improves concentration,
it adds vocabulary and at the same time it is fun.

Did you know that not all reading materials are intended for close reading?
Sometimes you have to use appropriate reading strategies to meet your purpose of
why you read. With the help of this module, you will be learning the different
reading strategies to use in order for you to become an effective reader. You will be
able to appreciate SCANNING, SKIMMING and CLOSE READING as these will be
thoroughly explained to you in the next pages.

This module provides discussion about the lesson with appropriate examples
and activities for you to browse and answer religiously. The activities are simply
designed to cater to your needs in developing your skills in identifying scanning,
skimming and close reading and how these are used.

Begin by reading and understanding the Most Essential Learning

Competencies and Learning Objectives. These will tell you what you should
know and be able to do at the end of every lesson.

It is not enough that you acquire content or information. You must be able
to demonstrate what you learned by doing the activities prepared for you. In other
words, you must be able to digest the lesson through your effort in giving answers
to all activities in your activity notebook.

Learning Competency

Use appropriate reading strategies to meet one’s purpose (e.g. scanning,

skimming, close reading, etc.) EN7RC-IV-b-10

1
At the end of the module, you should be able to:

1. Identify correctly scanning, skimming, and close reading. (Cognitive)

2. Use appropriate reading strategies to meet one’s purpose. (Psychomotor)
3. Appreciate the different reading strategies (Affective)

4. Display self-independence in accomplishing tasks and exercises on reading

strategies (Attitude)

Please take note that all answers shall be written in your activity
notebooks, and that there should never be any markings placed in this module.

5
WHAT IS IT

SKIMMING & SCANNING

1Skimming tells you what general information is within a section, scanning helps
you locate a particular fact. Skimming is like snorkeling, and scanning is more like
pearl diving.

2Skimming is a reading technique meant to look for main or general ideas in a text,
without going into detailed and exhaustive reading. In skimming, a reader reads
only important information, but not everything. This technique works effectively in
non-fiction materials, newspapers, and long novels.
When to use Skimming?

Use skimming in preview, overview, and review previewing (reading before you
read), reviewing (reading after you read), determining the main idea from a long
selection you don't wish to read, or when trying to find source material.

Skimming can save you hours of laborious reading. However, it is not always the
most appropriate way to read. It is very useful as a preview to a more detailed
reading or when reviewing a selection heavy in content. But when you skim, you
may miss important points or overlook the finer shadings of meaning, for which
rapid reading or perhaps even study reading may be necessary.

Use skimming to overview your textbook chapters or to review for a test. Use
skimming to decide if you need to read something at all. Skimming can tell you
enough about the general idea and tone of the material, as well as its gross
similarity or difference from other sources, to know if you need to read it at all.

To skim, prepare yourself to move rapidly through the pages. You will not read
every word; you will pay special attention to typographical cues-headings, boldface
and italic type, indenting, bulleted and numbered lists. You will be alert for key
words and phrases, the names of people and places, dates, nouns, and unfamiliar
words.

Examples:

1. Looking through a magazine to check what articles to

read
2. Scrolling through Instagram to see what’s popular
3. Reading a patient’s case notes in order to gain a general
overview of the patient

6
Scanning
3Scanning is a reading technique to be used when you want to find specific
information quickly. In scanning, you have a question in your mind and you read a
passage only to find the answer, ignoring unrelated information. 4Scanning refers
to the technique when one looks into the document or the text provided for
searching some specific text such as some keywords.

When to use Scanning?

Use scanning in search for headings and subheadings to get a good grasp of the
idea, as to where your required detail will be found.
5Specific facts may be buried within long text passages that have relatively little
else to do with your topic. Skim this material first to decide if it is likely to contain
the facts you need. Don't forget to scan tables of contents, summaries, indexes,
headings, and typographical cues for you to find out specific information that you
need.
Examples:

1. Looking through a Google search list

2. Looking up the meaning of a word in the
dictionary
3. Looking where to buy Avengers movie in a
magazine

CLOSE READING

6Close reading is thoughtful, analysis of a text that focuses on important details or

patterns in order to develop a deep and precise understanding. Close read-worthy
texts include enough compound ideas worthy of exploring and discussing to
sustain one or more days of instruction.

7We use this skill when we need to understand every work in a part of a text. This
may be used when we answer detailed reading questions in exams.

Examples: 1. Reading a novel

2. Reading instructions for putting together a DIY Wardrobe
3. Reading the steps in baking cookies

7
WHAT'S MORE

8 To skim, follow the general steps:

1. Read the table of contents or chapter overview to learn the main divisions of
ideas.
2. Glance through the main headings in each chapter just to see a word or
two. Read the headings of charts and tables.
3. Read the entire introductory paragraph and then the first and last sentence
only of each following paragraph. For each paragraph, read only the first few
words of each sentence or to locate the main idea.
4. Stop and quickly read the sentences containing keywords indicated in
boldface or italics.
5. When you think you have found something significant, stop to read the entire
sentence to make sure. Then go on the same way. Resist the temptation to
stop to read details you don't need.
6. Read chapter summaries when provided.

If after skimming you decide the material will be useful, go ahead and scan:

1. Know what you're looking for. Decide on a few key words or phrases–search
terms, if you will. You will be a flesh-and-blood search engine.
2. Look for only one keyword at a time. If you use multiple keywords, do multiple
scans.
3. Let your eyes float rapidly down the page until you find the word or phrase
you want.
4. When your eye catches one of your keywords, read the surrounding material
carefully.

9When you close-read, this includes:

1. Using short passages and excerpts
2. Diving right into the text with limited pre-reading activities
3. Focusing on the text itself
4. Rereading deliberately
5. Reading with a pencil
6. Noticing things that are confusing
7. Discussing the text with others
8. Think-Pair Share or Turn and Talk frequently or Small groups and whole
class
9. Responding to text-dependent questions
