Chapter 2

METHODS

This chapter presents the methods and procedures used in the study. It

includes the research design, population and sampling, sources of data, and data

analysis.

Research Design

This study followed a correlational research design, which determined if a

statistically significant relationship existed between the variables of interest of

motivation and engagement and the teacher’s level of experience (induction or

veteran) to predict the performance level of teachers as measured on the TKES

(2013). The objective of this research study was to test the self-determination

theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000) that related the variable of interest, motivation, and

engagement, of induction (first four years) level teachers to the motivation and

engagement of veteran (five or more years) level teachers to predict the level of

proficiency on the Teacher Keys Effectiveness System (TKES, 2013) evaluation

of induction teachers’ and veteran teachers’ classrooms in northeast Georgia.

This research study was non-experimental; therefore, there was no treatment

applied by the researcher to the subjects in the study (Ary, Jacobs, Razavieh, &

Sorensen, 2006).

Population and Sampling

The participants are currently Senior High School students and studying at

Lingunan National High School. Those students are studying and learning online

or with the use of the internet and gadgets in the school year 2020-2021. They

are the students who need to provide their gadgets and internet to use. This kind

of learning system is different than the usual or traditional studying known as

face-to-face learning. It requires the students and teachers to meet virtually to

start the discussion. Students must not lose their concentration and focus

because they will not understand the lesson.

The Senior High School Students or the grade 11 and grade 12 students

are chosen randomly. They will receive the online form survey questionnaires

after class, so they are not disturbed. The researchers also consider the

schedule of those students. They will still ask if it is fine with the student to be a

respondent in their study.

The location of participants is in their own homes due to this pandemic.

They are with their parents that are helping them or assessing them in their e-

learning. The atmosphere in that place might not suit their studying but they still

need to pursue learning something. The questionnaires cannot be sent as a hard

copy because of this pandemic, they will be sent virtually instead. Since in this

era technology is the most convenient way to send someone a message that is

why the researchers want to use it too.

The researchers used probability sampling and to be specific simple

random sampling for the study. According to Thomas, L. (2020), simple random

sampling is a sampling method where the population is a randomly selected

subset. Each member of the population has an equal or fair chance of being

selected. Among all probability sampling methods, this method is the most

straightforward. Because it is a single random selection that requires little

awareness about the population. Since this method will choose the participants

randomly the research that will use it will have a high internal and external

validity. It is used to make statistical inferences about a population.

The sample size is 182 Senior High School students is 331. While

the solved sample size is 182 students. Since the sample size is the number of

participants included in this study. Those students will have a randomly assigned

number and the researcher will only pick 1 to 182 students to be their

participants.

The researchers used a semi-structured survey questionnaire under

primary data collection as their instrument for their data gathering. There are 182

questionnaires for the respondents. The questionnaire distribution is through the

use of an online platform since we are practicing social distancing. Respondents

are meant to answer 25 questions that are necessary for the study. The answers

of respondents are measured through the use of scales that will determine the

level of their response.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers had allotted extensive time, cooperation, and effort in

developing and modifying their research survey questionnaire to distribute it to

their respondents virtually. The researchers’ adviser made a letter of request for

permission to conduct the study at the Lingunan National High School (LNHS). It

is noted by the researchers’ adviser and school principal and the approved the

researchers to finally distribute their survey questionnaires. Those survey

questionnaires were personally distributed virtually to Senior high School

Students. Data was gathered by the use of survey questionnaires. Those are

distributed online to answer by the respondents and will be collected virtually.

They let the schedule of online classes of the Senior High School Students finish

first before they sent their survey questionnaires online.

Data Analysis

In this study, the researcher employed two approaches which are

qualitative and quantitative research. Two types of variables were used in this

study namely: categorical (type of institution: public/private) and numerical

variables (all quantifiable data).

The survey was created by the researchers and the quantitative portion of

the data was analyzed using SPSS using Pearson Product Moment Correlation.

This study presented qualitative data alongside results of quantitative analysis

which added depth to the statistical findings.
