Pattern 1. 목적격 관계대명사 Pattern 2. 의문사+to부정사

관계대명사는 두 문장을 연결하는 접속사의 역할과 「의문사+to부정사」는 명사구로서 주로 목적어 역할을


대명사의 역할을 동시에 한다. 관계대명사가 대신하는 하며 의문사에 따라 의미가 달라집니다. 「의문사+to
(대)명사를 선행사라고 하며, 관계대명사가 이끄는 절 부정사」는 ‘의문사+주어+should[can]+동사원형’으로
은 앞의 선행사를 수식한다. 바꿔 쓸 수 있습니다.

1. Ann was the person whom I met on the way 1. Jake has to decide where to shop.
home. Jake는 어디에서 쇼핑을 할지 결정해야 한다.
Ann은 내가 집에 가는 길에 만났던 사람이었다. where to shop은 「의문사+to부정사」의 형태로 동사
선행사 the person이 사람이므로 관계대명사 whom을 decide의 목적어로 쓰여 ‘어디에서 쇼핑할지’라고 해석
썼다. whom은 이어지는 절에서 목적어 대신 들어간 목 하며 where he should shop로 바꿔 쓸 수 있다.
적격 관계대명사이므로 목적격 형태인 whom을 썼다.
현대 영어에서는 who 또한 주격, 목적격 형태로 모두
쓰인다. 목적격 관계대명사 whom은 생략할 수 있다. 2. Jake also has to think about how to get there.
Jake는 그곳에 어떻게 가야 할지도 생각해야 한다.
‘how to+동사원형’은 ‘어떻게 ~하는지’ 또는 ‘~하는 방
2. The woman whom I love most is my grandma. 법’으로 해석할 수 있다. 즉, how to get there은 ‘그곳
내가 가장 사랑하는 여성은 우리 할머니이다. 에 가는 방법’이라는 의미이다.
whom은 The woman을 선행사로 가지는 목적격 관계대
명사로, who나 that으로 바꿔 쓸 수 있다. whom은 관
계사절 안에서 동사 love의 목적어 역할을 하고 있다. is 3. I can’t decide what to eat first.
는 문장의 동사로 The woman에 수일치 되어 있다.
나는 무엇을 먼저 먹을지 정할 수 없어.
what 이하가 decide의 목적어 역할을 한다. ‘의문사
what+to부정사’는 ‘무엇을 ~할지’라는 뜻으로 문장에서
주어, 목적어, 보어 역할을 한다. 「what+to부정사」는
「what+주어+should+동사원형」으로도 바꾸어 쓸 수 있
다. 즉, what I should eat으로도 쓸 수 있다.
