UNIT III: Analysis and Reporting of Assessment Data Using the Alternative
Methods

Lesson 5: Using Rubrics

Activity
Write a one-page composition (several paragraphs) describing the world
today.
The society that we are living in today enjoys many privileges. However, the
privileges that we have now are definitely not something that anyone can earn
easily because it requires several centuries of hard work and effort. This is a
famous phrase that helps remind our nation of the sacrifice, dedication, and hard
work that our brave soldiers had put in in order to preserve our rights and
happiness. The phrase “freedom isn’t free” applies to our everyday lives. We are
allowed to live the way we choose without being subjected to any restricted
freedom. Everything that we have now such as freedom to express our opinion,
worship our own religion, arm ourselves, and live independent lives definitely
remind us of everything that our founder fathers and our brave soldiers had done
for us. We are able to freely desire the things that we want, choose our own path
and career, and become active citizens in politic since we are entitled to the right of
freedom of speech. Without their contribution and dedication to our country, we
would not have everything that we have had today. There would be no Bill of
Rights, Declaration of Independence, president, and the government that protects
people’s rights, and thus, we would be forced to follow everything that our beloved
Philippines tell us to do and live misery lives under their demands and oppression.
Therefore, the hard work and sacrifice from our courageous soldiers are something
that we definitely must honor and respect. To earn freedom, it requires effort, hard
work, and endurance.
Like freedom, everything that people desire has a high cost, and thus, they
are very valuable and precious. If we want to earn our degree in nursing, doctor, or
pharmacist, we have to go through several years of elementary, middle, high
school, and finally maybe four to six years of college. Sometimes when people
struggle in school, they find it hard and want to give up right away. However, our
brave soldiers, who endured more pain and hardship, fought the war until the end
despite all the obstacles and cruelties they faced in their way. Also, in order to buy
a car, house, electronics, and more, we have to work hard for money in order to
get what we want. If we really want something, we must fight for it until the end
even if we face barriers in our paths.
Therefore, the statement “freedom isn’t free” is very important because it
reminds us to honor our brave leaders including those who fought in the Civil War
and advocated for women rights and our founder fathers who put in a lot of effort
to create a government and a society that protect the people’s rights. Thus, we
should not waste all the hard work that our brave leaders had gave done for us and
value all the rights that we are enjoying today.

Analysis
Assess your composition as objectively as you can. Use rubrics in your
assessment.
The composition I’ve written about our world today isn’t that deep yet
meaningful. I’ve tackled about the society we live in today. I’ve made rules so that
I can limit the details appropriately, a content that is persuasive, a style that can
surely catch the audience’s attention and interest, I made sure to make it organized
for the sake of my reader’s comfy, and conventions to express the exact idea that I
am trying to convey.
Rules
Makes ones work clearer to the reader. The writer, in turn, usually
benefits from this fact.
Content
Source of reliable ideas, explanation and examples
Style
An arrangement of sentence structure that can help to convince the
audience
Organization
The accurate order of scenarios to easily understand the whole piece

Assessment
1. What is a rubric?
According to Navarro et al. (2019), a rubric is a coherent set of criteria
for students’ work that includes description of levels of performance quality
on the criteria.
Brookhart (2013) added that a rubric is a coherent set of criteria for
students’ work that includes descriptions of levels of performance quality on
the criteria.
A rubric is a type of scoring guide that assesses and articulates specific
components and expectations for an assignment. Rubrics can be used for a
variety of assignments: research papers, group projects, portfolios, and
presentations (Center for Teaching and Innovation, 2020).
A rubric according to David et al. (2020) is an assessment tool that
specifies the performance expectations for any kind of student work,
particularly those that are not traditional in nature, such as portfolio, outputs
or projects and performances. In this lesson, we are going to study in detail
what a rubric is.

2. Why are rubrics important?

According to Brookhart (2013), the main purpose of rubrics is to
assess performances. For some performances, you observe the student in
the process of doing something, like using an electric drill or discussing an
issue. For other performances, you observe the product that is the result of
the student’s work, like a finished bookshelf or a written report. Rubrics are
important because they clarify for students the qualities their work should
have. This point is often expressed in terms of students understanding the
learning target and criteria for success. And rubric helps parents understand
why a certain grade is given to their child's work.
