The Heart
• Location
• Three layers
1. Epicardium
• Outside layer
2. Myocardium
• Middle layer
3. Endocardium
• Inner layer
• Endothelium
The Heart: Chambers
• Four chambers:
• Atria
o Receiving chambers
o Right atrium and Left atrium
• Ventricles
o Discharging chambers
o Right ventricle and Left ventricle
• Systemic circulation
• Pulmonary circulation
• Interventricular septum
- Separates the two ventricles
• Interatrial septum
- Separates the two atria
• AV valves
Cardiac Circulation
- Anchored in place by chordae tendineae
(“heart strings”) • Blood in the heart chambers does not
- Open during heart relaxation and closed nourish the myocardium
during ventricular contraction • The heart has its own nourishing circulatory
system consisting of:
• Semilunar valves - Coronary arteries—branch from the aorta to
supply the heart muscle with oxygenated
- Closed during heart relaxation but open blood
during ventricular contraction - Cardiac veins—drain the myocardium of
• Notice these valves operate opposite of one blood
another to force a one-way path of blood
through the heart
- Coronary sinus—a large vein on the The Heart: Conduction System
posterior of the heart, receives blood from
cardiac veins • Intrinsic conduction system (nodal system)
• Blood empties into the right atrium via the - Heart muscle cells contract, without nerve
coronary sinus impulses, in a regular, continuous way.
• Special tissue sets the pace
The Heart: Associated Great Vessels - Sinoatrial node = SA node (“pacemaker”), is
in the right atrium
• Arteries - Atrioventricular node = AV node, is at the
junction of the atria and ventricles
• Aorta - Atrioventricular bundle = AV bundle (bundle
- Leaves left ventricle of His), is in the interventricular septum
• Pulmonary arteries - Bundle branches are in the interventricular
- Leave right ventricle septum
• Veins - Purkinje fibers spread within the ventricle
• Superior and inferior venae cavae wall muscles
- Enter right atrium
• Pulmonary veins (four)
- Enter left atrium
• Homeostatic imbalance
