Overview:

Melinda is a freshman student at a college she started attending there with a scholarship

but for her to keep the scholarship this semester she needs to pass her chemistry test and she has

bad test anxiety. Her anxiety is so bad she had a panic attack 2 days before the exam. But she

must do well in order to keep her place at the school.

Personal Experience:

I myself get anxiety from school and tests but usually only when I haven't prepared for

something. If I am anxious about a test then I try to make sure that I retain the information so I

have a technique. What I do is study for about forty five minutes to an hour and then after that I

stop studying and let the information settle to make sure I don't overload my brain. Between the

studying intermission I did something to de-escalate the tension. I usually relax and watch tv or

get on my phone , listen to music etcetera. This lets me retain the information that I had just

reviewed and is easier to remember later.

Recommendations:

As people from Cornell University “Manage Stress to Thrive.” Cornell Health has

recommended there are some ways to manage your stress when it's too high so that you can

manage it for motivation. Some of the best things to help you when managing stress are the

things that we normally do like taking care of yourself, eating , sleeping at a good time, and

exercising. You can also improve time management skills for more activities for yourself. As I

said before Meditation is one of the things they recommend to keep stress down. Somethings you

can do to calm you right before your test though are as follows deep breathing taking your time

to breathe while taking, visualization with an image in your mind of something or a place that

calms you even just letting it out in some type of song , dance or laugh to help you alleviate the

built up stress before your exam.

Conclusion:

If I was in Melinda’s situation the only type of professional help I would require is

tutoring. I believe there are ways of living being able to put your stress to the side and experience

whatever you need or want to. As I stated some actions to alleviate stress are meditation,

listening to music, hanging out with friends , visualization , exercise and even just letting it out

are all effective in relieving that stress that can get built up. Some good ways to start off before

the semester starts would be to get out and do the things you enjoy and when you have the time

prepare yourself for what you aren’t prepared for with material, videos , notes etcetera as long as

you keep those important tasks in mind.
