SAQ-1: Primer Activity
Recall a time when you missed a class and you
wanted to find out the lessons discussed by your teacher.
How did you ask your classmates the information from
what transpired in the class? (Write them down on the
separate sheets provided.)
Being able to communicate well and use
communication effectively for whatever function or
purpose it serves is our ticket to success in the academic,
social and business world. To communicate effectively,
a speaker has to successfully make his/her/ thoughts
well-taken. In same way, as a receiver, he/she should 3. Motivation

So, what are the common reasons why
we communicate? Today, we will learn
on the five basic functions of
communication.
1. Regulation/ Control
-When we communicate to regulate or control
someone or something, it is because of two reasons:
first, we want to meet our own needs or desires, and
second, we try to control the actions of other people.
-Regulation/ Control function is best observed
when giving orders or directions, making
suggestions/requests or attempting influence the actions
of others, offering alternative, persuading someone and
accepting or refusing directions.
When a teacher wants to control the
class, she/he would say “Please listen to
me attentively.”
2. Social Interaction
-In this function of communication, the individual
communicates not only to meet his/her own desires and
needs but also to socially interact with the people around
him. With this function, an individual is able to establish
the “self-esteem”, and learn to execute appropriate social
behaviors like respecting, greeting, sharing and refusing
politely.
“Hello! I’m Pedro, I’m glad to meet
you.” This is an example or statement
when you want to interact socially.
When we say motivation, it is the process of which we
try to initiate, guide, and maintain goal-oriented behaviors.
It is the drive to act or do something to improve
performance. Some examples of motivation function are
demonstrated when we encourage an individual to do
something or to make something more likely to happen by
showing him his strength, praising, recognizing his effort,
believing in him, showing appreciation and being a positive
role model.
When a mother encourages her son to do
better in school. She would say, “Langga,
please spend more time in reading and
studying your lessons. Enjoy schooling by
just giving your best in everything you do.
4. Information
Communication is the process of giving and
exchanging information from one person to another. It is
true that our general purpose to communicate is to give and
get information.
