Connotation and Denotation - are two principal methods of describing the meanings of

that might be found in a dictionary

Connotation
Is the emotional and imaginative association surrounding a word.

Types of Connotation
1. Positive (favorable) connotation—words that make people feel good
2. Negative (unfavorable) connotation—words that provoke a negative emotional
response
3. Neutral connotation—words that cause no emotional reaction at all

Denotation
Is the strict dictionary meaning of a word.
Denotation examples:

1. Dove: bird; any of certain birds of the pigeon family.

2. Light: the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible.

V. Assignment
Read the poem “Rainbow’s Reflection”. Choose at least 10 words and provide
its denotation and connotation. Write your answer in a 1 whole sheet of paper.

Rainbow’s Reflection
Staring skyward, looking inward,
Storm dissipating, yet clouds swirl still,
Shafts of sunlight pierce the gloom,
Catching, reflecting, yet bringing no warmth,
Horizon alive with a riot of colors,
Coalescing into a familiar shape,
An upside-down smile, so apt for the moment.

Gravitate towards tints of green and blue,

Embracing the coolness and earthy tones,
But brightness stands stark in its vivid absence,
So I pour out streaks of red, yellow, orange,
Admire the contrast of sun shades against
Palettes of water and foliage strewn haphazard,
Yet lacking a binding element to round out the whole.

Slowly, purple is drizzled in, a dark stain

Spreading like inverse oil on water,
Refusing to bind disparate segments,
Instead winding in willful tributaries,
An aquifer of undertones thrust forward
To overpower the cheerful mesh
Of those gay and happy, subsumed by reflection
Seeing only a fading, fleeting pathway
To pots of gold, promised yet unattained
