Course Outline
Every Organization, like individuals who make the Organization, strives to be effective and
successful. Achievement of its vision, mission, and objectives are the focus of all its efforts.
Organization systems are pathways that help organizations acquire and sustain this focus on
performance excellence. One such HR subsystem is Performance Management that facilitates
alignment of individual efforts with organization needs, thereby greatly improving the probability
and contributing towards achieving organization’s vision, mission, and objectives. The
challenges in performance management require a multi-disciplinary approach to address the
different facets of performance measurement and management.
Course Objectives
The specific objectives of the course are:
1) To explain the theoretical concept of performance management, define performance metrics at
business and organizational level in a given context
2) To discover how performance management system may be designed and deployed to address
issues of performance management
3) To identify managerial competencies required for sustaining the effectiveness of a
performance management system
Pedagogy
The pedagogy would be a mix of Lecture, Discussion, Group exercises in class, Case Analysis,
Assignments, Quizzes and Project Work.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Outline the basic performance management concepts and models and their strategic contexts
2. Define strategic performance aims and objectives
3. Explain and classify different performance appraisal methods
4. Construct performance metrics for different job roles
5. Examine critically the interpersonal processes related to performance appraisal, review and
feedback
