National Science Day

Introduction
One project I participated in during high school was Science Day. Which is an official
recuring yearly event where students form multiple groups from each class. The groups
prepare their experiment from 8 to 10 in the morning and begin conducting their experiments
for the rest of the day. The groups show their experiments for the passing students throughout
the day. Some experiments allowed for viewing students to co-participate with the conductors
of those experiments.

c. Project duration
i. The Project undergoes a planning period of 1month before the set
deadline, the experiments are prepared beforehand on science day. The
experiments are conducted after the preparation from 10 in the
morning until the rest of the school day till 4:30 in the afternoon.

Details of activity

The experiments were varied from

various subjects such as chemistry,
biology and physics. My experiment was
to test the ignition of the flammable liquid
isopropyl alcohol and its effect on the skin
while a protective layer is present between
both the skin and the ignited alcohol
material (Fig2).
The experiment was simple, it starts by
mixing water and soap with the isopropyl
alcohol. The isopropyl makes 20% of the
total volume of the mixture.

Success

The addition of soap succeeded in adding bubbles to the mixture which contributed to
utilising more surface area. The Isopropyl alcohol experiment succeeded by the
demonstrating that the ignition effect of the alcohol was absorbed by the protective layer of
water on the skin

Challenges

5
National Science Day

The main challenge was the fear of the first attempt, as logically igniting a part of the
skin surrounded by alcohol would result in burning it.

Conclusion

The experiment demonstrated that the protective effect of the water layer surrounding
the skin would isolate it from the burning effect of the alcohol mixture.
