Experiment 1: Familiarization with Laboratory Test Equipment and Instruments.

Activities/Assessments:

1. Draw a sinusoidal waveform with a peak-to-peak voltage of 6 V and a frequency of 1 kHz in

an oscillogram showing the grid lines of an oscilloscope as shown below. Use 1V/div vertical
division and 1ms/div horizontal division.

2. Draw the signal in (1) above, if vertical and horizontal divisions were adjusted to 2V and
500µs respectively.

3. 3. Repeat (1) above if the frequency is adjusted to 10kHz

4. Repeat (1-3) above for square wave signals
5. Draw a simple series circuit consisting of 1-500Ω resistor and 1-1kΩ resistors supplied by a
DC power supply set at 10Vdc. Insert multitesters (digital or analog) to measure the voltage
across each resistor. Comment on the meter readings and set-up.

Comment: The set-up of this simple circuit is there are two resistors connected in series and is supplied
by a 10V DC. The meter readings are based on the principle of series circuit wherein the voltage is
different across different resistors and the sum of voltage drop across each resistor is equal to the
applied voltage.

6. Repeat (5) above with the resistors in parallel, insert multitesters (digital or analog) to
measure current along each resistor. Comment on the meter readings and set up.

Comment: The set-up of this simple circuit is there are two resistors connected in parallel and is
supplied by a 10V DC, this way it made 2 branches (one for each resistor) that is sharing the same
voltage across each branch. Its meter readings show that even it has the same amount of voltage in each
branch, because of the different resistance, the voltage across all the branches is same but the current
vary depending on the value of the resistance. Greater resistance gives lower current flow, while lower
resistance gives higher flow of current.
Assigment

1. What is the name of the instrument that generates AC signals?

Signal Generator

2. Can you get a DC signal from the DMM? If not, why?

No, it cannot give DC signal to power up components, it only measures voltage, current,
and resistance whether from AC or DC.

3. If you are asked to get a sine wave, what information should you be provided with?

Peak value, Amplitude, Average value, Instantaneous Value, Periodic time and
frequency, RMS value, and Peak to peak value.

4. Write the formula that relates frequency with the time period.

Time period is inversely proportional to the frequency so f = 1/T. T refers to the time to
complete one cycle (in seconds).

5. What are two axes in the display of the oscilloscope, what variables do they represent?

The two aces in the display of the oscilloscope are X and Y axes. The horizontal axis (X-
axis) represents time, and the vertical axis (Y-axis) represents voltage.

6. Can you to display more than one measurement in an oscilloscope at the same time?

Yes, modern scopes can display two or more signals at a time and, therefore, would
have a set of jacks for each signal to be displayed.
7. For a dual power supply, show the necessary connection to obtain -5V and -5V with respect
to a common (chassis) ground. Repeat for -5V and +5V. (watch: YouTube video Dual Power
Supply Connection / Serial plus minus electronics laboratory PS with center tap, by Bob
