Assignment: INDEPENDENT STUDY PROJECT

Assignment Description:
This assignment involves selecting a topic, researching the topic/collecting and selecting
materials for the chosen topic in the Internet and in the library, writing a journal and proposal,
writing an outline, and giving a speech. In the journal, students present their notes of the resources
used that is the main ideas of the material to prepare the speech. The speech is informative. It will
be presented extemporaneously, meaning it shouldn’t be read. Students use an outline as needed to
give a speech.
The grade for the IS project includes assessment of materials used to prepare the chosen topic,
the speech itself, and response to questions after the speech.

Purpose:
The purpose of independent study is to encourage and further help the student’s self-
improvement.
Objectives:
The core objectives of the course are to:
 learn to select, analyze and use information obtained from reading articles, stories, and
texts through small project
 learn to search for information related to the selected topic
 enlarge vocabulary related to the chosen topic
 learn to write a proposal and an outline of a topic
Procedure:
Students offer their own topic(s) for SIS project. They choose a topic related to their
major.The topic has to be approved by the instructor.
 Do the search of the material on the topic .Find and select three articles related to the topic
and use material to prepare the speech.
 Once the topic has been chosen and approved, students complete the first assignment,
independent study project (SIS 1) and the second assignment SIS 2 according to submission
schedule: before midterm I.
