RIZAL'S HOMETOWN
Calamba was a hacienda town which
belonged to the Dominican Order
A few kilometers to the south looms is the
legendary Mount Makiling in somnolent grandeur.
In 1876 when he was 15 years old and was a
student in th Ateneo de Manila he remembered his
beloved town
He wrote a poem Un Recuerdo A Mi Pueblo
(In Memory of My Town)
The first memory of Rizal,
in his infancy, was his
happy days in the family
garden.
Because he was frail, sickly, and undersized child, he was given the most
tender care by his parents.

Rizal went to Biñan on
June 1869. He was
accompanied by his older
brother Paciano, and
taught by Maestro
Justiniano.

Rizal entered Ateneo in
1872. He belonged to
the class composed of
Spaniard s, mestizos,
and Filipino. However,
he was considered as an
interior and was placed
at the bottom of the
class.

1877-1882

He continued his education at UST and finished a year in


Philosophy and Letters after deciding to shift to a medical
course. Fr. Pablo Ramon, the Father Rector of Ateneo whom he
consulted, recommended medicine.

He studied Cosmology, Metaphysics, Theodicy, and History of


Philosophy.
Out of 28 young men taking
Ampliacion only four including Rizal
were granted the privilege of taking
simultaneously the preparatory course
and the first year of medicine.

Rizal also received his four year


practical training in medicine at the
Hospital de San Juan de Dios in
Intramuros.
Academic Journey to Spain
1882-1885
After his medical studies at University of Santo Tomas,
Rizal left the Philippines on May, 3 1882, and arrived
in Madrid in September 1882.
In 1885, after studying at the Universidad Central de
Madrid, Rizal, who was then 24 years old, went to
Paris to acquire more knowledge in Ophthalmology.
RIZAL'S TRAVELS
Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda is
the most traveled Filipino hero in history. The
travel and adventure of Jose Rizal are an important
facet of his education and sophistication through
which he learned the culture and politics of other
countries. Rizal’s first trip abroad was on 1882
bound for Dr. Jose Rizal was died on December 30,
1896. In Bagumbayan (Luneta), a city promenade
that also served as a killing field for those who
opposed Spanish colonial rule in the 19th century
Philippines.
