well. There were a few minimal

of material in the clear but
nothing too drastic. These areas
were sanded back and machine

FINAL HURDLE
It’s decal time! My advice to you
on this bike is to fit all body panels
together to ensure all livery work
lines up as it should. There are
several big decals that span across
panels, going over gaps and also
along varied edges in particular;
that massive ‘Suzuki’ logo. Grab
your go-to decal softener and a
hairdryer if you so wish and your
good to go.
I will say that Tamiya’s decals
are a little unforgiving, so go
steady and don’t rush applying
them, especially in tricky areas.
Once they are all applied the bike
looks fantastic with some superb
colour contrasts. I opted to apply
my decals without being cleared
over which I usually would do
but on this occasion, due to time
constraints, they were left as they
were but still looked great. I did
cover them with a little hand polish
just to aid the gloss.

FINAL THOUGHTS
All in all, this bike has been lots of
fun to work on. It holds some super
fine details, very well engineered
and seems carefully thought out.
The profile on this GSX-RR just
looks super cool. Watch out for the
fuel tank fitment into the rear clam
Box supplied chain and sprocket work. To read how this as you’ll need to give it some gentle
look was achieved, check out Issue 318 for part one of persuasion and the decals do take
the build review some work. You’ll need to find that
balance when applying them and
knowing when to stop before they
crack. Apart from that, a stunning
model once built up that’s worthy of
anybody’s work bench. l

1999 Monte Carlo iconic Ford Escort Cosworth/

Colin McRae to lead their
campaign with the new car.
McRae gave the car its debut
win on a WRC round at the
Safari Rally which was the
3rd round of the ’99 season.
When I returned to
building model during 2020
I really only had one idea in
mind, to build rally cars and
be a bit biased towards those
from the mid '90s onwards
as these are the ones I recall
watching. Building those
cars driven by McRae was a
bit of a bonus as he was my
favourite driver from that era
of WRC (and being a fellow
Scot didn’t hurt either!).
This kit from Tamiya is
long discontinued and I had
to be a bit patient waiting
for it to appear for sale
secondhand at a reasonable
price. My patience paid off
and I was able to pick up
this kit at the beginning of
2021 with much excitement
for the build to come. The car
was adorned with the iconic
Martini livery made famous
of the decades by various
teams across motorsport and
in my eye only heightened
the appeal – it’s a livery
that’s just cool. I had heard
that the rear Martini stripes
were a little tricky to mask
successfully, so it was one
area that I was a little
concerned about, but we’ll
U

I had been somewhat

To mask the red sections I

DECALS
Prior to making a start with
the decals I decided to put

a few smaller decals that

to reduce the risk of the red

not unexpected), they were

bad against the white paint.
The one thing that did cause
issues was rather fragile
decals. They had a habit of
splitting when picked up off
the backing paper, so those
that split were patched
up as best as I could and
thankfully, overall, it's not
that noticeable.
The big question with
the decals was how did my

V FINAL THOUGHTS
Eduard have once again
produced a stellar kit of an
iconic aircraft to add to their
line of WWII fighters. It’s
modest parts count and ease
of assembly makes it a truly
quick and enjoyable build.
As mentioned earlier, I have
built several of their Spitfire,
Bf109, Fw190 and Mustang
kits and this latest release
continues their tradition of
Eduard 'stepping up their
game' and making each
subsequent series even better.
I will definitely build another

SODY Pollard tackles

a very unusual
World War 2
tank-destroyer,
built around
the famous
17-Pounder gun…

T
hough there were
plenty of tank
destroyers on the
battlefields of WW2,
none was quite as distinctive
as the Archer, the Valentine
variant that boasted a
17-Pdr gun as its main
armament. What set this
machine apart was not that
weapon, but the fact that it
was designed backwards, the
barrel of the gun pointing
towards the vehicle’s rear
end, its extended barrel
sitting neatly over the
machine’s redesigned engine
deck. This meant that the
vehicle could engage an
enemy and then, without
any need to turn around,
scoot off, ready to tackle
another foe should the
need arise. It was a bizarre
design that offered plenty of
punch in one very unusual,
though to my eyes at least,
attractive package.
Having chosen this kit,
I also decided that I would
approach the build and
especially the finishing in
a very different way. Over
the last few months I’ve
spent a lot of time watching
‘how-to’ videos from other
genres such as fantasy and
Warhammer 40K and that
has lead me to wonder if
those ideas and techniques
would transfer over into our
world. That being so, I spent
time on this model pushing
the finish to accentuate
it more, make everything
more definite and then
apply the colours in a way
that made them brighter
than normal. I wanted it
to looked less ‘weathered’
and more ‘painted’ if that
makes sense. It’s not gone
as far as I wanted it to, but
I hope that you will see that
sometimes you can shift
gears and still come up with
something exciting and
pleasing to look at!U

Ignoring the barrel as that would be painted later, the gun’s breach and mount have been painted and weathered using the same ideas
and techniques used elsewhere. Note here that some stains and oily deposits have been added around the mount using oil paints, these
being particularly apparent around hinges and working parts. Chips were once again added with Camo Black Brown and a sponge

The exterior was painted in an identical manner to the interior. Everything was base-coated with
several opaque layers of Tamiya XF-61 Dark Green (which incidentally is the suggested colour
for the completed model…) and then highlighted with layers of Mr. Color RAF Green 2, lightened
incrementally with Tamiya Wooden Deck Tan. Concentration was placed on highlighting upper
surfaces, with lower areas such as around the suspension being left intentionally darker in tone.
Even without additional work, the model looks really interesting at this point!

Wheels and tracks. The wheels were first base-coated

with Tamiya Rubber black and then, using a circle
template, the hubs were airbrushed with the greens
used around the hull. Tracks were airbrushed with Mr.
Hobby Schwartzbrun and then everything was washed
with a layer of Humbrol Khaki Drill, thinned with
Humbrol Enamel Thinners. Once dry, the wheels were
drybrushed with Matt Black to pop the detail, the worn
areas of the tracks being further accentuated with a
layer of Uschi Van Der Rosten Steel polishing powder
applied with a cotton bud to imitate worn metal. And
that was that!

The exhaust was fun to paint and weather.

The part was base-coated in black and then
oversprayed with thin layers of Lifecolor Dark
Rust and then subsequent layers of a mid-tone
and Light Rust. Once dry, small areas of lighter
shades were brushed on, that collection of
colours being blended together with a thin wash
of Abt502 Dark Rust. Brackets were picked
out with Vallejo Grey Green and then edges
drybrushed with Games Workshop metallics

The rusty rails for the stowage certainly add a splash of colour around the
rear hull, as do the distinctly lighter upper panels on each of the bins. A
blue-grey colour was chosen for a lot of the softer stowage around the rear
hull to make them pop a little against their greener, drabber surroundings

Panels on the engine deck were defined with matt black washes and then
with dark oil colours such as Dark Mud and Engine Oil, both from the
Abt502 range. These colours were applied neat and then blended-in with a
soft flat brush, used dry to help create a soft, featured edge. Note also how
individuals details, though drybrushed to make them stand out, have also
been painted individually with lighter colours, each now being a distinct
feature rather than a muted detail

Decals were applied over the matt finish of the model by floating them
onto a pool of Johnson’s Klear, this wet layer being used like a gloss coat
to remove the chance of the dreaded silvering that we all want to avoid.
Once dry, the decals were oversprayed with a layer of flat varnish, the only
time that material was used on this model. A final blend-in with oils and the
markings looked to be part of the finish, rather than a last-minute addition!

DEF MODEL, KOREA

MiniArt's recent kits of the US G506
Chevrolet cargo truck are superb
productions that are loaded with detail.
Just as the box-standard tracks can be the
weak link in the realism of a tank kit, the
wheels – and more pertinently, the tyres –
of a truck model can be the deal-breaker
when it comes to authenticity. Here,
MiniArt's Chevys get stunning replacement
resin wheels/tyres, each with crisp sidewall
data, accurate treads and sharp wheel-nut
detail, as well as a mild degree of weighted
'sag'; just enough to look convincing. They
come with pre-cut painting masks and are
worth every penny.

I replaced the plastic parts with a
superb resin detail set from Aires.
There is a choice of seats on the market
and I went with one from Quickboost
which has all of the belts added.
Don’t get me wrong, the Aires seat is
good, it just needs the included belts
assembled and attached. Throughout
this build I used Airscale cockpit decals

replaced the flexible rubber with some
wire wrapped around a thin section
of solder. Ultimately, the set was an
almost drop in fit with just a little of
the inside areas needing some grinding

With the cockpit complete, the fuselage
could be closed up. I took the chance
of making the canard hinges stronger
by drilling the holes and adding a

it can be sanded and painted.
When I set out on this odyssey I had
the idea to make a set of full-length
engine intakes, as the kit lacks them.
My plan was simple; I would find
some suitable tubing, cut it into two
then attach and blend the pieces into
the back of the kit parts. In the end, I
found some 22mm plastic pipe which
was white inside; it was in fact some
domestic water tube I found in my
garage! In order to bend the pipe so it
would curve up and over the main gear
bays, I applied heat from a hot air gun
until it was soft, then bent it to the
shape I needed. It was difficult to keep In a moment of madness, the author decided to add a full intake from some 22mm plastic water pipe,
bent to fit over the wheel bays and inside the fuselage. An engine compressor face was copied from
the inside profile round but after two the kits engine and fitted to the rear of each intake

THE BIG MACKS, A VISUAL HISTORY OF THE MACK WHEELED PRIME MOVERS IN US ARMY SERVICE 1940-1958
DAVID DOYLE, DAVID DOYLE BOOKS
www.daviddoylebooks.com

The Mack NO series of 7½ ton, 6x6 trucks were monsters, primarily designed as tractors for
heavy artillery pieces such as the ‘Long Tom’. The prime movers featured lifting hoists and
special towing hitches to allow them to haul the artillery, and they took this role until replaced
by tracked vehicles. The Macks were produced in significant numbers for this function,
and very few were used in other ways. When we eventually get a Mack NO-2 in 1:35, it
will be an impressive model! This landscape A4 book has 120 pages packed with very
clear factory photos and a large number of in-action shots, plus some detail pictures
of preserved examples. Overall, this book is a goldmine of information for anyone
interested in this important WW2 truck and particularly for anyone wanting to make a
detailed model. The trucks remained in service until the 1960s and this book will be
vital reference material for a wide range of readers. CLS

TANKS IN THE EASTER OFFENSIVE 1972, THE VIETNAM WAR’S GREAT CONVENTIONAL CLASH
WILLIAM HIESTAND, OSPREY PUBLISHING
www.ospreypublishing.com

This new book is No.303 in the New Vanguard series from Osprey, the prolific publisher of
all things military. This latest volume, in the usual style of 50-page softback book, covers the
first and possibly only major use of armour by the North Vietnamese Army and the Easter ’72
offensive involved attacks from the Quang Tri province in the north, the Dak To area in the centre,
to the An Loc area close to Saigon. The book reveals that the NVA , more used to a guerrilla
war, struggled to organise large armoured formations, and missed many opportunities, while the
ARVN forces were better organised but sometimes withdrew too easily. The intervention of US
aircraft was often decisive, but the battles were closely matched with heavy losses on both sides.
This book describes the vehicles in use, which ranged from WW2-era T-34 and Chaffee tanks
through to more modern T-54 and M-48 types. The vehicles are illustrated in colour profiles, as
well as photos, giving the reader a clear view of the tanks and APCs used on both sides. The
numbers of vehicles and the unit organisations are described, but the most readable part is the
account of the key engagements, and the outcomes. The significant factors were often the ability
of the ARVN to out-range the NVA tanks, the use of USAF Skyraiders and increasing use of anti-
tank missiles on both sides. The quality of leadership was often a significant factor in stiffening
resistance, but the end of this brutal war was already in sight, and this fabulous little book is a
great summary of how the final stages of the war played out. CLS

RED STEEL, MODERN SOVIET/RUSSIAN AFV IN ACTION
CHEMA CABRERO
www.acrylicosvallejo.com

Within this hefty tome’s 240+ pages, we are treated to some inspiring work from the author,
well known Barcelonian modeller Chema Cabrero; more specifically, no less than eight full-
build chapters on the Soviet/Russian ‘T’ tanks of the post-war era. We are presented with a
United Nations T-55, Ukrainian T-64, DDR T-72B ‘Dolly Parton’, T-72A with Ural turret, an Egyptian
T-54 from the 1973 Yom Kippur War, a 1994 Chechnyan T-80BV, a Syrian T-72AV and a T-72B
Ulan Ude 5th Independent Tank Brigade. Supplementing this extraordinary body of work are
colour illustrations by Pablo Patricio Albornoz, tank crew figures by Daniel Rivas Galindo and
photo-references by TMMI and MIM mags’ very own Zack Sex. The models are self-contained
articles in themselves, covering superdetailing, painting, weathering and, impressively, a vignette
presentation for each tank. Chema’s modelling work is superb and this book will give the reader
some useful insight into modern-era ex-Soviet and Russian main battle tanks in miniature. TMMI

GRAF ZEPPELIN’S EAGLES, AN OPERATIONAL HISTORY OF THE BF109T

FRANCIS L MARSHALL, CHANDOS PUBLICATIONS LTD
www.chandospublications.co.uk

The Messerschmitt Bf109 is, of course, an iconic Luftwaffe fighter aircraft of the Second World
War and in its better know ‘Emil’, ‘Friedrich’ and ‘Gustav’ incarnations it battled with Allied
fighters in the skies over Europe, Africa and the Soviet Union. Perhaps less well known is the
Bf109T ‘Toni’ variant, in reality the ‘T’ more prosaically denoting ‘Träger’ or ‘carrier’, the navalised
version of the fighter that was destined for the ill-fated Graf Zeppelin aircraft carrier. And it had
a convoluted history. In 1941, seventy examples of the Bf109T were constructed, but when the
carrier project was cancelled they were given to the Luftwaffe which deployed them in Norway.
Later however, the plan to complete the Graf Zeppelin was renewed and the Bf109Ts were recalled
from Norway and converted back to the carrier version. The final cancellation of the Kriegsmarine’s
Graf Zeppelin at the start of 1943 saw the aircraft repurposed yet again, this time to Jasta Helgoland
(Heligoland, an island in the middle of the German Bight) and given a new lease of life. Finally, a
the end of ‘43 the Bf109Ts were once again taken to Norway, finally being withdrawn from front-line
service in 1944 and the remaining aircraft transferred to training units. This magnificent new, 362-page
book from Francis L Marshall traces the Bf109T’s entire chronology, offering the reader an extremely
thorough and engaging read. For the modeller there is plenty; masses of wartime photographs (500)
of the aircraft, their crews and their Allied enemies, plus maps, sixteen colour illustrations, scale
drawings and more, completing this extraordinary production. Highly recommended. TMMI
