INTRODUCTION:

One of the fundamental components of a person's environment is air. The atmosphere of

the planet is made up of gases like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, and minute amounts
of some rare elements. An environment with clean air is essential for humans. The life and
health of people depend greatly on this. Any change in the natural composition of air may cause
grave harm to life forms on earth.

‘’Air pollution is the presence of one or more contaminants in the

atmosphere such as gases in a quantity that can harm humans, animals, and
plant’’
Our daily activities and quality of life are both impacted by air pollution. The biosphere and
the standard of living on the globe are at risk. Since there have been more industrial
operations in recent years, there is an obvious necessity to check the quality of the
Air. People need to be aware of how much their actions have an impact on the quality of
the air. A system for monitoring air pollution is proposed in this project. The Arduino
microcontroller was used in the creation of the system. The real-time monitoring and
analysis of air quality along with the logging of data to a remote server that receives updates
through the internet are all features of the air pollution monitoring system. The Parts per
Million (PPM) measures were used to measure the air quality, and Microsoft Excel was used
to evaluate the results. The system's measurements of the air quality were precise. The
outcome was shown on the hardware's display interface and was accessible via the cloud
on any intelligent mobile device.

RELATED WORK:

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) sensors were used in a wireless distributed mobile air
pollution monitoring system that was reported. The paradigm of air pollution monitoring is
quickly shifting because of improvements in wireless communication and sensor
technologies. The Internet of Things (IoT) also enables the development of intelligent
ecosystems in which various devices communicate and work together.
The air pollution monitoring systems that are now in place have undergone numerous
modifications. For instance, suggested a technique for tracking indoor air quality. The
system uses a combination of address and data centric protocols, as well as the "request
and response" protocol, to wirelessly transfer sensor data. The device keeps track of a
home's indoor air quality and shows the sensor readings on a screen. An Unmanned Aerial
Vehicle (UAV)-based system was used by the researchers in to monitor the air quality in
difficult-to-reach places. The UAV control portion of the system included a Pixhawk
autopilot, and the sensing and data collection portion utilized a Raspberry Pi. Data on
pollution were acquired, and an adaptive algorithm was employed to assess it.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

One environmental issue that cannot be overlooked is air pollution. Long-term exposure to
contaminants harms people's health. Building air quality monitoring stations is one of the
most expensive traditional air quality monitoring techniques. Real-time monitoring of the air
quality is possible with this project. Create a device that can detect the quality of the air and
display it as a percentage, Detect the amount of carbon monoxide (CO) in the air and
display it as a percentage, Display the temperature in degrees Celsius after sensing it.

RESEARCH GAP (LIMITATIONS):

‘’Systematic bias that you did not or could not control which could
inappropriately affect the results’’
Air quality monitors require up to 7 days to calibrate
Most consumer-grade air quality monitors do not measure carbon monoxide (CO)
Measured VOCs include both harmful and harmless compounds
An air quality monitor does not clean the air; • It does not reveal the source of the
pollutants
The average consumer-grade monitor costs around 35000/-RS
ppm cannot be used to measure contained gases accurately
Humidity should be less than 95%

PROPOSED SOLUTION:

The model was created using an Arduino Uno microcontroller, a 16 by 2 liquid crystal display
(LCD) screen, a Wi-Fi module 8266, and a MQ135 Gas Sensor. Five tiers made up the system
overview process classification. The first layer consisted of environmental characteristics
that were measured. Studying the traits and attributes of the sensors made up the second
layer. Making decisions, detecting, measuring, fixing the threshold valve, periodicity of
sensitivity, timing, and space made up the third layer. The sensor data acquisition layer was
the fourth layer. The ambient intelligence environment made up the fifth layer. When
controlled by the microcontroller, the sensor gathered data and used the Wi-Fi module to
transmit it over the internet for analysis. On their cellphones, users could keep an eye on
the parameters that were measured.

3
RESULT AND DISCUSSION:

The "Thing-speak" internet application was used to assess the air quality data obtained from
the proposed system's sensors. The hypertext protocol is used to store and retrieve data
from linked objects utilizing the open source Thing-speak application programming interface

over the internet or over a local area network. A wide range of embedded devices and web
services are also accessible through it.

CONCLUSION:

This study suggested a sophisticated air pollution monitoring system that continuously
monitors an area's air quality and shows the readings on an LCD screen. Additionally, it
transmits measured data to the "Thing talk" platform. The technique aids in raising
awareness of the daily air one breathes. This monitoring tool may provide air quality
measures in real-time.
