1. Name one literary work that have influence events in
society. (Direct or Indirect)

Noli Me Tángere
(Touch Me Not)
2. Discuss how did it influence the society and your group's
reflection on the literature?
Literature explains the reflection of our lives as Filipinos and how we
interrelate and connect with our larger whole or what we called society. Thus, one of
the best examples of it is Jose Rizal's literally work “Noli Me Tangere” which was all
about the description of the Spanish colonization here in the Philippines and how the
Spanish treated Filipinos badly.
The novel does not only affect nor awaken the sleeping Filipino consciousness
and identity but also found the fundamental grounds for aspiring to self-sufficiency
and autonomy. It depicted the real-time events and ills that Filipino endured during
the Spanish colonization and encouraged Filipino people to rise above the
mistreatment, injustice, and inequality through a revolution and fight for freedom and
tranquility.
In this novel, the priests uphold the greatest power in which gives
them the authority to control anyone around them. One example of the
mistreatment is the death of Crispin, the son of Sisa and brother of Basilio in
the story. He had been accused of stealing of two gold pieces by the
sacristan mayor and when the sacristan mayor suddenly arrived and began
beating him, Crispin was unable to escape and presumably killed by the
sacristan mayor and Padre Salvi. It is the same at todays’ era in which the
government has the power and sometimes that power to influence is being
misused that caused so much agony, struggles, and difficulty among the
constituents that tremendously affect the society as a whole.
Hence, Dr. Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere impacts and tells us that we ought to
reflect on our actions, beliefs, perspectives as well as motivation for our country. The
main concept of the literary work is to promote and stimulate nationalism, patriotism,
and acceptance of change in ourselves which still applies to us today since the
characters and the happenings in the novel resemble our life, culture, and beliefs as
Filipinos. As Filipinos we must patronize our country and our own by simply abiding the
law, promoting our Filipino culture and loyalty, and apprehending the authentic goal of
the country by helping each other towards the advancement or the BAYANIHAN
CULTURE. It imparts so much lessons that we shall adhere and execute such as the value
of integrity and wisdom, fighting for our own rights, and loving our country as we love
ourselves. This novel displays the blueprint of the past that the present generation
embraces and to not repeat the history itself and allows us, the youth, to be the catalyst
of change for our beloved nation, the Philippines.
