EICAS - CANCEL & RECALL SWITCHES

PURPOSE
The CANCEL and RECALL switches control the display of the
caution (level B) and advisory (level C) messages on the upper
display unit (DU). Warnings (level A) are not affected by these
switches.
LOCATION
The CANCEL and RECALL switches are located on the
captain’s instrument panel (P1), just to the left of the upper
EICAS display unit.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
The CANCEL and RECALL switches are push-type momentary
switches.
OPERATION-CANCEL
Pressing the cancel switch removes any caution and advisory
messages displayed on the upper DU. This switch is also used
to page through caution and advisory messages.
OPERATION-RECALL
Pressing the RECALL switch will return to view those caution
and advisory messages that are still applicable.

PURPOSE
The master caution lights show the word CAUTION when lit
to direct attention to EICAS.
LOCATION
The master caution lights are located on the left and right

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
The master caution lights are single action (momentary)

The left and right EICAS computers receive 115 volts AC, 400

EICAS COMPUTER - CONTINUED

OPERATION
As soon as power is applied by the system circuit
breakers, the EICAS computers are operational. There
are no switches involved. Only one computer drives both
display units at any one time. The other computer is used
as a backup. Normally, the left EICAS computer is driving
the displays. This is accomplished by positioning the
computer select switch on the display select panel to the
AUTO position. This position allows automatic switching to
the right computer in the event of a left computer failure.
Manual selection of the active computer is provided by
selecting “L” or “R” on the computer select switch. The
EICAS computer unit provides continuous fault monitoring
of the interface and signal conditioning circuits, digital
processing circuits, symbol generating circuits, video and
deflection circuits and power supplies.
MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
The EICAS computer unit contains electrostatic sensitive
modules. Do not handle the computer unit before reading
appropriate procedures for handling electrostatic
discharge sensitive devices (reference maintenance
manual 20-41-01).

EICAS-YELLOW BAND INHIBIT

OPERATION
EICAS provides numerous automatic features to maximize crew
information and to assist the crew during high workload
conditions. One feature is the automatic inhibit of the yellow-band
display during takeoff and go-around phases of flight.
YELLOW-BAND INHIBIT - NORMAL ENGINE OPERATION
When the takeoff (TO) or go-around (GA) mode is selected, the
left and right engines’ EGT yellow bands and related exceedance
monitoring are inhibited for TEN minutes to be consistent with
engine operating limits. After ten minutes in the yellow band, or 20
seconds after selecting another thrust mode, the pointer, digital
readout, and surrounding box change to yellow. Red-band
monitoring is continuous.

OPERATION
Warning messages cannot be cancelled, but caution and
advisory messages can be removed from the display and
recalled by using the EICAS CANCEL/RECALL switches.
MESSAGES - CANCEL FEATURE
In the example shown, pushing the CANCEL switch removes
only the caution and advisory messages from the display, while
the level A message remains.

Cancelled messages are recalled by pressing the RECALL

EICAS - MESSAGE CONSOLIDATION

PURPOSE
EICAS combines or replaces multiple component
related messages with individual system messages to
maximize the amount of information available to the
crew. This is called message consolidation. The graphic
illustrates two examples of consolidated messages.
Any time an engine is shut down by positioning the fuel
control switch to cutoff position or by pulling an engine
fire switch, the “L/R ENG SHUTDOWN“ level B caution
message appears. As shown in the graphic, these are
replacement messages since they both inhibit and
replace other engine related messages.
Another example of message consolidation is the level
C advisory message. It combines the individual level C
advisory window heat messages to alert the crew that
there are multiple unheated windows.

EICAS - ON GROUND INHIBIT

OPERATION
If the airplane is on the ground and both engine fuel control
switches are in the cutoff position, the master caution lights
and the beeper tone are inhibited for any new level B
caution messages.
The only exception to this occurs during an altitude alert
test where the altitude alert level B caution message
appears, the beeper operates normally, but the caution
lights are inhibited.
When this on-ground inhibit is removed, neither the master
caution lights nor the beeper sounds are inhibited for any
caution condition present.

• Computed airspeed is greater than 80 kts
• Radio Altitude is less than 400 feet

EICAS - MANUAL EVENT RECORD/READ

OPERATION
MANUAL EVENT DISPLAY
EICAS eliminates the need for hand recording of systems
The manual event recorded data can be displayed on the
and performance data. The crew may manually initiate
appropriate maintenance page by pressing the MAN EVENT

In addition to auto events, maintenance parameters can be NOTE: WHEN THE MAN EVENT READOUT IS

• On the ground only - Pressing the REC switch on the
Maintenance Panel records the subsystem
parameters from the real time maintenance format

PERF/APU). Messages are not recorded.
Subsequent presses of either switch causes data to be

EICAS - EVENT DATA ERASE EICAS - EVENT DATA ERASE

OPERATIONAL FEATURES
EICAS provides erase capability of the stored auto and manual
event data by means of an ERASE switch on the maintenance
panel. Each maintenance page format is erased individually.
ECS, ELEC/HYD, EPCS, AND PERF/APU DATA
To erase the recorded data for either a manual event or an auto
event:
• Display the desired maintenance page by pressing the
appropriate display select switch on the maintenance panel.
• Press either the MAN EVENT READ switch or the AUTO
EVENT READ switch on the maintenance panel.
• Press the ERASE switch until the recorded event data
disappears.
ENG EXCD DATA
To erase the recorded values of engine exceedance, call up the
ENG EXCD page by pressing the ENG EXCD switch on the
maintenance panel, and then press (and hold) the ERASE switch,
as above. Since the stored exceedance are automatically
displayed when the format is called up, the AUTO or MAN EVENT
READ switches do not have to be used.

EICAS DISPLAY - PARAMETER MISSING OR INVALID

ABNORMAL OPERATION
If a parameter’s input to the EICAS system is inactive or becomes
invalid, the analog pointer and digital readout go blank. The
graphic illustrates an EGT parameter that is inactive or invalid. To
determine whether or not the EICAS computer is at fault, the
offside computer can be selected. If the abnormal display remains,
it is unlikely that the EICAS computer is at fault and the input data
circuits should then be checked.

ABNORMAL OPERATION
Whenever the EICAS display select panel fails, the active
EICAS computer automatically displays the primary and
secondary engine parameters in the normal formats on the
upper and lower display units (DU's), respectively. In
addition, the level C advisory message, “EICAS CONT

ABNORMAL OPERATION
If an EICAS DU fails or is blanked by a faulty computer, the engine data is
automatically shifted to the remaining display unit, and the level C message

IN FLIGHT OPERATIONS
During this failure, the STATUS page, STATUS cue, and all MAINTENANCE
pages are inhibited in flight. (or while the airplane is on jacks). The ENGINE
switch is operational, and cycles the remaining display between compact-full and
primary formats.
ON GROUND OPERATIONS
If the STATUS page or any MAINTENANCE page is selected when the airplane
is on the ground, the selected page is displayed on the remaining unit, and the
standby engine indicator (SEI) activates, to show the engine indications.
