A MOVIE BY ERNEST PRAKASA

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter deals with background of study, the statement of the problem,

purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation and

definition of key term. All those are discussed as follow:

A. BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Literature are the result of human creation, taste, and initiative, apart

from providing entertainment are also loaded with values, both the value

of beauty and the values of life teachings. People can find out the values of

life, the composition of customs, a belief, and the outlook on the life of

other people or society through literature. With the presence of literature

that talk about human problems, literature and humans have an inseparable

relationship. Literature with all its expressions is a reflection of human

life. Problems in human life are an inspiration for authors to express

themselves with the media of literary works. The sentence above can be

concluded that literature may not be created without the element of human

presence. Basically, literature cannot be separated from humans, both

humans as writers and as literary connoisseurs. Observing this, it is clear

that humans play a very decisive role in literary life and the development

of a literary work. Literature are human personal expressions in the form

of experiences, thoughts, feelings, ideas, passions, and beliefs in a form of

living pictures that can evoke charm with language tools and are described

in written form. Basically, literature is very useful for life. Literature is a

type of entertainment thatintellectual and spiritual. It can be concluded that

this literature can provide insight and knowledge for the reader. So,

literature can give awareness to readers about the truths of life, even

though they are depicted in the form of fiction. Literature can also provide

joy and inner satisfaction for writers and readers.

Literature as a portrait of people's lives is a literary work that can be

enjoyed, understood, utilized by society. Literature are created because of

a person's inner experience in the form of events, which are interesting so

that the idea of imagination that is poured in the form of writing and

literature will contribute to the values of figures and social order, even

though the literature is only in the form of fiction, but in fact, literature can

provide value. moral values for the readers. Literature always present a

picture and life itself, which is a social reality. This life will include the

relationship between people and God, humans and their God, and events

that occur in a person's mind.

Literary works are imaginative works Pradopo (1994: 59). This means

that the literary work occurs as a result of handling and the result of the

handling is a discovery, then the discovery is compiled into a system with

the power of imagination, to create a new world where before there was no

literature, life is life, while life is the most interesting game. In terms of

the language used by the author, the way of writing in a literary work, and

the background of the creation of a literary work. Literary works are

imaginative, it can be concluded that literary works can affect the soul of a

reader so that readers seem to be carried away and feel for themselves the

events that are in the novel. Another benefit of literary works is that they

can be used as an experience to work, because anyone can pour their heart

and mind into artistic writing.

By reading a good fiction novel, it is like playing a game with a high

level of difficulty rather than playing a trivial game where players describe

or ignore existing rules (Stanton, 2007: 27). The point of this opinion is

that when reading fiction, it takes a high level of understanding to be able

to capture what is conveyed by the author in a literature. In understanding

a novel, it is the same as living the fantasy world created by writers, and

sometimes being carried away by the stories in the novel. However, it is

not enough just to do that or it is not enough to just look at the text, but

more complete if we are also able to reveal the author.

The beauty of language or aesthetic function in a literature will also

increase the weight of the literature Aminuddin (1990: 29). The style of

language is the embodiment of the author's ideas. The purpose of this

statement is that language style is closely related to the way the author

presents ideas in his work. The appearance and expression of these ideas

are manifested in the form of various language styles. Imagination

contained in literature, although wrapped in the spirit of creativity, cannot

be separated from subjective tastes and tendencies, personal aspirations

and opinions when responding to objects outside themselves, as well as

individualistic charges inherent in the author, so that the expression of

works based on the power of intuition. and imagination, in addition to the

power to absorb the realities of life.

Literature are born from the expression of deposits of experience that

already exist in the soul of the author, deeply through the process of

imagination (Aminuddin, 2009: 57). The opinion above can be concluded

that a literature is born because of the desire of the author to express his

existence as a human being which contains certain ideas, ideas, and

messages inspired by the imagination and socio-cultural reality of the

author, and uses language media as a transmitter or a literature. This is a

socio-cultural phenomenon that involves human creativity in its creation.

An author will invite reading to enter the experience or imagination of

literature (Nurgiyantoro, 2007: 3). The purpose of this opinion can be

concluded, an author will live various problems or the reality of life with

full sincerity, then re-expressed through the means of fiction by his

imagination and creativity. Literature and values of life are two social

phenomena that complement each other as an extension. As a miniature,

literary works function to invest a large number of events that have been

framed in patterns of creativity and imagination. As an imaginary work,

fiction offers a variety of human and human problems, life and life.

Based on the various opinions above, it can be concluded that a

literature is a work of art that is used by an author for entertainment

purposes and has its own rules or structures that are different from other

works of art. With the aim of an author will usually try as much as

possible to direct the reader to the pictures of the reality of life in the
novel. Like the story in the novel Penari Kecil by Sari Safitri Mohan, it

can bring readers as if they are in that life.

The events that occurred in Ngenest The Movie, brought to life by the

main character as a Chinese person who is considered a minority and other

characters as indigenous people. A writer will describe human life with

problems, conflicts with other people or conflicts that occur in themselves.

The author plays an important role in creating the characters depicted in

literary works. In the film Ngenest by Ernest Prakasa presents the life

story of Chinese people in Indonesia who have various kinds of conflicts

in the form of words that have intrinsic and extrinsic elements. Therefore,

an author tries his best to direct the reader to pictures of the reality of life

through the stories in the film.

On that basis, there are still literary studies that only emphasize the

history of literature or literary theory, and have not studied what literary

appreciation is and how to study literature in its entirety, even literary

studies in general are still in the structure of literary works (with a

structural approach) and have not touched upon literature. Literary

meaning is the essence of a literary work. The shortcoming of this

structural approach demands the importance of using other theories that

are more likely to explore literary ideas and meanings.

This analysis will focus on the elements of conflict in the film.

Researchers will analyze the conflict in the film Ngenest the movie.

Because according to the researcher the story is interesting where the main

character of this film is Chinese and is always discriminated against by the

 natives but with a strong determination he wants to blend in with the

natives. So that researchers are interested in analyzing the novel. The

researcher analyzes the conflicts that support the story. Conflict is an

important event that can develop the plot. If a story doesn't have conflict,

it's boring. The characters only appear in the same activity in each chapter

and there is no conflict in the story. The audience will feel bored and will

not be interested in reading the novel. “Conflict is an essential element in

development plots” (Nurgiyantoro, 2010:122). But if the story has conflict

the reader or audience will be interested to read or watch the story again

because the audience wants to know how the story ends.

Based on the description above, the researcher intends to conduct a

study under the title. "THE ANALYSIS ON CONFLICT IN ‘NGENEST

THE MOVIE’ A FILM BY ERNEST PRAKASA".

B. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

To get the right research results, a problem formulation is needed. The

formulation of the problem in this study is as follows.

1. How are the conflicts in Ngenest The Movie?

2. What are the types of conflict in Ngenest The Movie?

C. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

Based on the problem above, the purposes are:

1. To describe how conflicts in Ngenest The Movie are.

2. To describe the types of conflict in Ngenest The Movie.

D. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

1. Theoretical Significance
 Theoretically, through this analysis, it contributes some useful

information and clear understanding about literary theory itself and

specially everything that has related to conflict.

2. Practical Significance

a. For the researcher : The researcher finds information about conflict

in Ngenest The Movie.

b. For the viewer : The researcher hopes that the audience towards the

conflict in the film Ngnest can accept the differences between the

Chinese and the natives that occur in real life as told in this film.

E. SCOPE AND LIMITATION

1. Scope

There are several elements that can build a literary work, such as

themes, plots, characterizations and so on. As for the supporting

elements that can make a literary work look more interesting, such as

conflict, and moral values that can make the story more meaningful.

2. Limitation

In this research, the researcher will analyze the conflicts that occur

in the film Ngenest The Movie.

F. DEFINITION OF KEY-TERM

Conflict is an important event to develop a plot. Conflict suggests in a

situation that is not expected by the actor. Conflict also suggest on an

event is not pleasure. Conflict is often referred a fight between two

characters, protagonist and antagonist.

 Ngenest The Movie is a film by Ernest Prakasa that tells of his life as a

Chinese living in Indonesia. The film NGENEST tells the story of Ernest

Prakasa's life as a man of Chinese descent, where minorities are always

discriminated against. from elementary to middle school, he was always

bullied by his schoolmates because he was different, where his physical

appearance strongly mirrored the average Chinese. White skin, slanted

eyes. and it turned out to be very detrimental to Ernest, because the

difference was that he could not mix with the natives and was always

bullied. from then on he did not want the same fate. So, he really wanted

to marry a native woman, because he hoped that his descendants would

not suffer the misfortune he experienced just because of visual differences.
