IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES

I. Introduction (Time Frame: 30 minutes)

Lay out means the process of relocating the point of boundaries and property line of the side where the building is to be
constructed. There are certain procedures that are to be observed in laying out such as:
• clearing which means preparing the site by removing and disposing bushes, trees, fences and lose boulders and grass
on the top soil which are unnecessary during excavation
• staking is establishing the boundaries by placing markers on the property corners and property lines
• batter boards is placing of boards nailed horizontally at the stakes where the reference point of building measurements
are to be established.
• establishing the exact location of the building foundation

When the exact location of the building foundation has been established, then excavation will now be performed. Excavation
is creating a hollow on the soil where its depth is indicated in the building plan. The area is now prepared for setting form panels.
D. Development (Time Frame: 2 hrs)

There are several steps that are need to be followed in setting and fixing form panels.
Basically, before starting with the procedures, workers must prepare first the necessary tools, materials and equipment required
for the job.

Tools and Equipment

a. pencil
b. wrenches and pliers
c. claw hammer
d. nail box for lock pin
e. plumb bob
f. spirit level
g. pull-push rule
h. chalk line
i. steel square
j. personal protective equipment
k. steel/metal scaffold and its parts

Materials
a. plans/ working drawing
b. lumber
c. nails
d. nylon string

Following are the conditions and precautions to be observed during setting and fixing form panels:

Conditions:
1. Equipment, tools and materials must be properly checked.
2. Setting and Fixing Form Panels/ Components Assembly must be free from any obstruction.
3. Setting and Fixing Form Panels/Components Assembly procedures must be precisely followed.
Pre-cautions:
1. Always observe safety precautions while performing the task.
2. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn during work.

Steps in Setting and Fixing Form Panels and Components Assembly

1. Prepare the area for the panel setting.

2. Prepare the panels and components.
3. Apply oil on the formworks to prevent sticking of concrete.
Any type of oil will prevent concrete from sticking to wood. Spray the surfaces that will face the wet concrete with a heavy
saturation of oil. Allow the oil to penetrate the wood for 15 to 20 minutes. Apply a second heavy spraying of oil just before
pouring concrete.
4. Set the form panel based on the given drawing or plan.
5. Connect the side panel connector’s elements and web.
6. Set the braces on the formworks by using temporary nailings.
7. Check the squareness, plumbness and levelness using the prescribed tools.
8. Fix the braces securely for the formworks.
9. Perform good housekeeping after the operation
10. Perform good housekeeping after the operation.

E. Engagement (Time Frame: 2 hrs.)

Learning Task 1:

Discuss your understanding on the Steps in Setting and Fixing Form Panels and Components Assembly using drawing or pictures.
Give a short explanation of each picture.
A. Assimilation (Time Frame: 2 hrs.)

Learning Task 2:
Read and understand the situation. Explain your answer to the given guide questions in 1 – 3 paragraphs.

Situation A:

Contractor A plans to put up a formwork for the column of a building. The materials, tools and equipment were available and
ready to install. It so happened that the excavation of the foundation yielded plenty of water and the mud was so sticky.
Consider yourself as the foreman of the workers in the site.

Situation B:
If You are the foreman in the construction area in-charge of putting up or installing the formworks for the columns of the
building; the type of soil in the area is sandy. Which may collapse when the excavation for the footing and column was already
deep.

Guide questions
1. How can you handle the situation?
2. What are the strategies that you will do to finish the job.? Explain.
3. Would your strategy meet the time to complete the job?
4. If your strategy would not meet the alloted time for the task, what is your next strategy or plan? Do you think it would work?
Why? or Why not?

V. ASSESSMENT (Time Frame: 1 hr.)

(Learning Activity Sheets for Enrichment, Remediation, or Assessment to be given on Weeks 3 and 6)

Learning Task 3: True or False: Identify whether the statement is correct and write TRUE and if it is incorrect write FALSE.
