TAILORED GARMENTS

Tailored garments are designed to fit smoothly, giving the illusion of


a trim body. This smooth fit is achieved by designing the garment to fit with enough
ease that figure flaws are well hidden. Tailored garment is characterize by
constructed in order to maintain the designed silhouettes regardless of the figure
beneath.
In this unit, you will be able acquired knowledge and skills about tailored
garments. The involvement of the use of pads, backing, interfacing and lining
impart shape and body. You will also learn the how it was done traditionally, the
use of canvas pad-stitched by hand into the fronts and shoulder area of the jacket.
You will be familiarized with the different materials used as part of the garment.

UNIT OUTCOMES:

At the end of the unit, then you must have;

1. Identified the different ways of preparing the dress form for tailored
garments;
2. Acquired knowledge and skills in draping the tailored basic jacket and two-
piece jacket sleeve;
3. Practiced the skills in draping the tailored garments;

LEARNING CONTENT

Steps in preparing the dress form for tailored garments:


A. Pin the shoulder pads to the dress form so
that they extend at least ½ inch beyond the
armhole ridge and are centered on the
shoulder seam.
B. Tape the dress form;
1. Hipline – 9 inches down from the
waistline at the center front. Tape from
the center front to the center back. If the
lower edge of the dress form torso is
parallel to the floor, this edge may be
used as a guide.
2. Bust line – from the apex to apex and
continuing to the center back, parallel
to the hipline.
3. Shoulder seam – beginning at the
shoulder seam and neckline
intersection, the tape should extend
over the shoulder pad and through the
plate screw to the side seam.
4. Princess seam – form the front over the
shoulder pad to the back.
