ORAL COMMUNICATION

Speech Context

● Refers to the setting in which communication takes place and how it is conveyed.
Knowing the speech context of a discussion allows us to quickly comprehend the
message and provide clear, pertinent comments.

Types of Speech Context

○ Intrapersonal Communication
○ Interpersonal Communication

Intrapersonal Communication

● This communication takes place internally. In other words, the speaker serves as
both the message's source and its recipient. When you reflect on yourself, you
examine your feelings and thoughts. Knowing how you feel will help you decide how
to respond to it.

Example : Having a self-reflection after making a mistake or when you are practicing your
script for a presentation

Interpersonal Communication

● This conversation involves two or more parties. Depending on the relationships


between the parties participating, the talk can be formal or informal, private or
casual. Interpersonal communication includes two types: dyad and small group.

Example : Having a meeting with your group mates to plan the output.

Types of Interpersonal Communication

Dyad Communication - Two people are involved in this communication. (e.g. talking with
your friend)

Small Group Communication - Refers to interactions between three or more people who
are linked by a shared identity, a common goal, or both. (e.g. a parent-teacher meeting)

Public Communication - You can convey a message to more people in one place while
using this style of communication. An individual usually informs or persuades individuals
while delivering a message to the general public. (e.g. Examples : a public speaking
occasions, seminars, and conferences.)

Mass Communication - This refers to communication that occurs through media such as
radio, television, newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, internet and many other types
of media. (e.g. A cancellation of class announcement by the city governor through social
media such as Facebook and Twitter)

Organizational Communication

● This is talking about internal communication in businesses. This covers exchanges


and interpersonal relationships among coworkers and between superiors and
subordinates in a professional setting.

Example : Having a team meeting with all employees.

Types of Organizational Communication

● Formal Organizational Communication - transmitting official information through defined


guidelines and official channels between two or more parties working within the same
organization. Most of the time, it is done in writing. (e.g. Business reports and letters.)
● Informal Organizational Communication - Informal communication is described as
communication that takes place outside of the formal, predefined channels. Grapevine is
another term for a system of unofficial communication. Informal communication involves
the flow of information in all directions without regard for authority or level. (e.g. asking a
coworker a question or casually greet and have a little chat with a coworker)
