Anticorrosive
Zinc electroplating without special dimensional requirements
Parts without thread

1. Scope of application and objective

An anticorrosive is applied to parts which are exposed to atmospheric conditions due to
their place of installation.

This standard applies for parts which require zinc electroplating and for which no special
dimensional requirements have been specified.

3. Requirements / Description

3.1 Notes on design

A hydrogen embrittlement of the material must be considered when carrying out chemical
pretreatment, zinc electroplating or hot dipping of high-tensile steels. Parts made from
materials featuring a tensile strength of Rm > 1000 N/mm2, a hardness of > 34 HRC or a
surface hardness of > 340 HV may not undergo electroplating.

Due to the deterioration of fatigue strength characteristics caused by embrittlement of the

metal, in welded steel parts and structural parts in particular, pretreatment prior to
galvanising should be avoided for all grades of steel. Should this method of anticorrosion
treatment prove unavoidable, appropriate preparatory measures are to be considered
when carrying out durability analysis.

For secondary parts, such as hand-rails, all types of steel featuring a yield strength of
Re < 460 N/mm2 may undergo hot-dip galvanising, regardless of treatment condition, as
long as their design is compatible with the galvanising process.

Open gaps and joints are to be avoided. Corrosives could leak from these cavities
following the galvanising process and impair the galvanising process.

− Weld seams must be properly sealed, thus the weld seams must be implemented
around all welded parts completely (see fig. 1).
− Wherever recesses are evident, the recesses must either be welded shut or the recess
manipulated so that the extremities of the recess can be joined (see fig. 1).

completely all the
way round.

For parts featuring a weight of > 0.5 kg, locating bores must be added for insertion of the
parts, or mounting threads for suspension of the parts, wherever insertion or suspension
possibilities are not already featured due to the part’s geometric form.

Special validations for rotating parts:

a) Weight of part > 0.5 kg to 5 kg, length < 300 mm

Insertion bore centrally on the face side with ∅ 7 mm, depth 20 mm, deburred
b) Weight of part > 5 kg to 10 kg, length < 300 mm
Insertion bore centrally on the face side with ∅ 10 mm, depth 30 mm, deburred
c) Weight of part >10 kg or length > 300 mm
Insertion bore centrally on the face side with thread complying with DIN 332-2 form
DS, max. M16.

For all other parts, the specification on the respective drawing applies.

Partial galvanising is to be avoided due to the high manufacturing costs. If this can not be
avoided because of the design, the procedural method must be clarified with the person
undertaking the galvanising.

Parts indicating surface damage may not be welded.

It has been ascertained over extensive testing that yellow chromating proves a superior
anticorrosive than blue chromating for the same layer thickness. As the cost for both
procedures is the same, yellow chromating should be favoured due to the superior surface
protection.

Exception: Assembly plates for switch cabinets. In this case blue chromating is to be
preferred due to the poor surface conductivity resulted by yellow chromating.

The following specification is to be applied to the design drawings or factory standards:

Anticorrosive in accordance with LN

1st Stamp:
252-1
DIN 50961 - Fe/Zn 25 C

Anticorrosive in accordance with LN To be applied to assembly

2nd Stamp:
252-1 plates for switch cabinets
DIN 50961 - Fe/Zn 25 B

3.2 Notes for the workshop

The workpiece may not exhibit any cracks, foreign inclusions and laminar imperfections.

Cold weldings (incomplete fusion), open pores, piping porosity and residues of weld spray
films (containing silicone) may not occur.

Grease, colour markings, welding slag, weld spatter and scales must be completely
removed.

Rust, oil and welding smoke do not need to be removed as they are removed during pre-
treatment in the pickling solution at the galvanising plant.

3.3 Notes for surface treatment

3.3.1 Surface composition

If it is possible for the surface composition to remain unprocessed in accordance with the
drawing/factory standard sheet, point 5 of DIN 50961 applies, thus the surface being
protected must be eligible for the corrosion protection process. Ascertainment of this point,
and if necessary, verification by way of consultation with LBC, is the responsibility of the
person applying the coating.

3.3.2 Anticorrosive
Galvanising is resulted in accordance with DIN 50961 - Fe/Zn25 C.
The specified coating thickness of 25 μm is the minimum coating thickness.

With coating thicknesses of approx. 25 µm, a moderate to sustained corrosive protection,

category C3 in accordance with ISO 12944-1 to -8 is to be attained. Reference values,
see Table 1.

environmental influences. There are no guarantees for these reference values in
accordance with ISO 12944-1 to -8.

3.3.3 Procedure
Parts < 0.5 kg may be galvanised with barrel application.
Parts > 0.5 kg must be galvanised free-standing or suspended as rack goods, depending
on their form.

3.3.4 Delivery forms

Delivery of surface-protected parts is to be effected in such a way that there is absolutely
no possibility of the parts sustaining damage.
