A Semi-detailed Lesson Plan in Science

By: Emily B. Genaniban

I. Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

A. Identify the methods of heat transfer.

B. Appreciate the importance of these methods in real life situation.
C. Perform the given situations involving the methods of heat transfer.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Methods of Heat Transfer

Reference: Science (Learner’s Material)

Materials: 2 beakers, dropper, hot water, cold water, piece of cardboard and penny

III. Procedure

a. Motivation
Show a drawing of a kettle with water placed on top of the burning stove. Ask the class to label it
by putting conduction, convection and radiation in the arrow it represents.
b. Presentation
What I have presented a while ago has a relation to our topic which is the methods of heat
transfer.

Methods of Heat Transfer

a. Conduction- takes place when the particles between objects or places that are in contact
vibrate and collide at different speeds due to the difference in their temperature.
Example:
 Touching a stone and being burned
 Now you think of a metal spoon put in a bowl of a hot champorado that you were
about to eat when you suddenly remembered that you had to do first a very important
task. When you came back, you noticed that the handle of the spoon become really
hot. What do you think happened?
List of thermal conductivities of common materials

Materials Conductivity Materials Conductivity

Silver 429 Concrete 1.1
Copper 401 Water at 200 0.6
Gold 318 Rubber 0.16
Aluminum 237 Polypropylene plastic 0.25
Ice 2 Wood 0.04-0.4
Glass, ordinary 1.7 Air at 00C 0.025

Convection- takes place only in fluids because it involves the movement of particles themselves from one
place to another.

Example:

 Boiling Water
 Hot air balloon

Radiation- refers to the emission of electromagnetic waves which carry energy from the surface of the
emitting body or object.

Example:

 Heat from a fire

c. Application

The students will be group into three. They will be given the materials which they would utilize and be
able to distinguish what type of heat transfer is taking place in the following situations:

1. They will hold a penny.

2. Heat from the sun warming your face.

3. A girl walks outside barefoot.

4. Heat from a light bulb.

5. Cardboard over the top of the container with hot water then the tap water with food coloring on top of
it.

IV. Evaluation

They will be given an illustration depicting several situations that involve heat transfer. Their task is to
identify situations or example found in the illustration that involves the different methods of heat transfer.

 Encircle three situations in the drawing that involve any method of heat transfer.
 Label them 1, 2, 3. Conduction, convection, and radiation consecutively.
