Activity: Which feels hotter?

I. Objectives:
1. Describe how heat transfer by conduction occur,
2. Investigate how different materials, conduct heat and determine which one transfers heat the fastest,
and
3. Cite some application of heat transfer by conduction in real life situation.
II. Materials:

Cup/bowl Metal spoon wood spoon/popsicle stick

Hot water Plastic spoon margarine/butter

III. Procedure:
a. Fill the glass with hot water until it is almost full.
b. Prepare the spoons to be used and put a little margarine on them.
c. Make a prediction. Which material will heat up faster and melt the margarine?
Write your answer:

d. Submerge the metal spoon, plastic spoon, and wooden spoon with margarine into the bowl of hot water
at the same time.
e. Wait some time and see what happened to the margarine?
f. Record your observation and answer the following guide questions.

IV. Guide Questions:

1. Was your prediction correct? Share your observation about the activity.

2. Which materials heat up faster and cause the margarine to melt when submerged in hot water?

3. How does the conductivity of the metal spoon compare to the plastic spoon and the wooden spoon?

4. Explain how heat transfer by conduction occurs.

5. Give at least 2 importance of heat transfer by conduction in our life.
