LESSON 1 RULES FOR CHORDS, SECANTS, AND TANGENTS IN CIRCLES

A. TWO CHORDS

THEOREM: If two chords intersect in a circle, the product of the lengths of the segments of one
chord equal the product of the segments of the other.
INTERSECTING CHORDS FORMULA:

FORMULA:

EXAMPLE 1: Find the value of x .


SOLUTION: From the given illustration and conditions, we let a=x , b=10,
c=12 ,and d=8
By substitution, we have

B. SECANT-SECANT
THEOREM: If two secant segments are drawn to a circle from the same external point, the
product of the length of one secant segment and its external part is equal to the product of the

B. AREA OF SECTOR OF A CIRCLE


DEFINITION: A sector of a circle is the portion of a circle enclosed by two radii and an arc. It resembles a
"pizza" slice.
