Course description

Organizational Behaviour (OB) investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behaviour within
an organization, and it applies that knowledge to make organizations work more effectively. This course introduces major
concepts and tools used in managing self and others. It introduces students to various concepts of managing others and
self.

The course Organizational Behaviour 1 aims to understand the interaction between individuals and resist the
inclination to rely on generalizations provides valid insights into human behaviour. The concepts covered intend to
make the learner have an in depth understanding on - how to predict and understand events; the influence of
values, attitudes, personality, and emotion on individual behaviour; and the implications of specific behaviours on the
organization. Research in Psychology, Social Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology asserts that attitudes can be
modified under self-awareness and practice. This implies that if a learner chooses they can identify their weaknesses
and learn from Organizational Behaviour 1 how their own personality, attitude, perception, values, motivation
affect others and how others’ personality, attitude, perception, values, motivation affect them and apply those perspectives
to organizational inquiries. Core topics include the basics of employee motivation and performance, personality and
determinants of personality, communication, work perceptions and attitudes, decision-making, learning theories,
emotions, employee involvement and conflict management.

The focus of the course will be to enable the learner appreciate the diversity of human race and understand their own
personality in the context of their future career. Successful completion of the course will empower the students, even
if one does not plan to work in human resources, to be able to improve any process in which people are involved in any
area of the business. The students will be able to possess basic knowledge of the key concepts and theories
relating to organizational behaviour, understand about one’s and others behaviour in organizational settings, think
critically about their own and others behaviours in organizational settings, and thus to act more consciously, apply
relevant theoretical perspectives and concepts in developing an understanding of various internal (organizational) and
external (environmental and cultural) factors that influence human behaviour in organizations.
