Basically, green computing is known as green technology which is related to using of less
energy and environmentally friendly uses of computing accessories or electrical
appliances. It promotes sustainable solutions of technology and smarter way of using
technology without any environmental losses. In this way we will describe about green
computing and its elements

1.1 Carbon Footprint reduction

Carbon foot print is known as total emission of greenhouse gases causes by Individual,
Organization, Company, Industry etc. It is defined as equivalent tons of carbon dioxide
(CO2). E.g. When we drive car, the engine will burn fuel and it generates certain amount
of CO2 even of electrical appliances and computer related accessories also emitted certain
amount of CO2 so, in today's world of technology, it is abundantly emitting in every
sector like Industry, Automobiles, IT sector etc. IT sector is a biggest sector which have
special role of emitting greenhouse gases.

There are many ways which we can all do to reducing carbon footprint at work,
home and travelling. At home we can use less energy consuming accessories like led bulb
and should always use energy star product to generate less carbon gas.

1.2 Renewable Energy Sources

Renewable energy sources are considered as clean energy sources comes from natural
sources which can be constantly replenished. Nowadays renewable energy sources are
becoming more important power sources for offices, industries and organizations. Dirty
energy sources include fossil fuel like coal, gas and oil which are limited in stock and
cannot be replenish immediately. So, here are some renewable energy sources for
organizations which helps to promotes green computing and to emitting less carbon foot
print.

1.2.1 Solar Energy

We have been harnessing the solar energy for the thousand of years to do different types
of our daily activities like grow crops, stay warm and dry foods etc. Today we can use
sun's rays to fulfill our different kinds of energy needs. Instead of using electrical power
organizations should use solar energy which is renewable source of energy. Through the
solar energy organizations can use different kinds of electrical appliances. Nowadays
some vehicle is also engineered through solar energy. Some solar vehicle is using
globally and they are expanding their business worldwide. Solar energy is a primary
source of renewable energy which contains heat and light of sun. Organizations can use
solar power by multiple way like heating water, lighting and to access electrical
appliances.

Harnessing renewable energy source is a better way to tackle with the energy crisis in
future. Wind energy is also known as "Clean Energy Source" and "Green Energy" which
does not pollute air and water. Wind energy is a source of energy which harnesses natural
wind power to generates energy. The amount of energy produces depends upon the speed
of wind in that area so it is mainly suitable in hilly region and mountain region where
wind will be blow constantly in same speed. The cost of wind power plant is far chipper
than hydroelectric plant which pay back the cost of planting in three to four months back.
So, wind energy is far better to reduces carbon footprint.

1.2.3 Water
Water is a main source of energy which also helps in carbon footprint reductions. By
using this source, we can generate hydroelectricity power to access different kind of
electrical appliances. Hydroelectric power plant is most effective way of using renewable
energy sources which can generates high amount of outputs and can contains large
volume of energy. Economically its cost of production is much cheaper than any other
energy sources and it contributes in economic upgradation of nations also.
Hydroelectrical power eliminates the needs of fuel and other nonrenewable sources of
energy. So, it helps to reduce carbon footprints globally.

2 Promotion of Green Computing

The leading IT Corporations like Microsoft and IBM are promoting green computing
through their product. The methods they have taken are as follows.

2.1 PVC Product Packaging

Microsoft had early started PVC Product Packaging since 2005 that resulted globally
reduction of plastic packaging of 1.5 million pounds. In the term of durability PVC is
more durable than any other materials. PVC is a non-toxic element which helps to
reduces carbon footprint in the environment.

2.2 Cloud Computing

IBM and Microsoft are using cloud computing features to reduce the uses of physical
device and accessories. Basically, cloud computing is on demand resources of computing
environment like data storage, computing power without management of active users. As
they promoting less uses of physical devices to daily operation of computing activities.
Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing platform to building, testing and accessing
application through their well-managed data center. IMB cloud is a suit of cloud
computing as they allow both service Platform as a service (PAAS) and Infrastructure as
a service (IAAS).

2.3 Power Management

Leading IT company such as IBM and Microsoft are using power management product to
promote green computing through their software and hardware. Energy star program is an
environmental protection program that helps and determine how they contribute to save
energy. Product of Microsoft and IBM always puts their product to sleep automatically to
save the energy. This makes their product low power consumable and helps to reduce
carbon footprint. Their setting always let us to choose to manage power plan as our need.
IBM also contributing in green technology as they became chartered member of energy
star program. From these two products we can choose IBM cloud to our organization as
they giving both of services through their product.
