ACQUIRING NEW DATA…

The family, being the basic unit of society, has a unique role in nation-building. It is recognized by the
Philippine Constitution as, "the foundation of the nation.”
Hence, as every Filipino is a member of the Filipino family and a citizen of the nation, he/she is all expected
to participate in nation-building, and perform an important role in the personal development of every individual
toward responsible adult roles. Thus, the significant contribution of the family for nation- building cannot be
neglected. (Arrogante, et al, 2010:56)

To develop harmony in the community and society, parents should see to it that the formation of the young
start in the family. Nobody can expect the citizens to render service to the community if this was not learned in the
family.
Law-abiding citizens thrive in society when families teach their children to obey basic rules. True
enough, the quality of life in every nation depends on the quality of life in every family. Helping neighbors or
community members and observance of ordinances and laws are manifestations of responsible citizenship. This
can be done individually or in groups.
In this lesson, you will learn that families are truly instrumental in developing responsible citizenship.

Outside the home and the school, you belong to a

community or society where there should be a "give and take"
relationship and where varied and effective means are used in
pursuit of common goals and objectives.
Some changes happen in the community such as
physical factors in your environment such as
communication, roads, facilities, and services. These may
greatly affect your needs, interests, wants habits, ways,
values, goals, and other things important to you and every
human being in society.
As these changes happen in your community, each
member has to play a role in serving the community and
its institutions. Service is a value that moves
every individual to do something good and beneficial to the whole society without expecting something
in return.
Why is the value of service very significant in making a successful life in society? Whether we like it or not, society
can never and will never be able to provide all the needs of its citizens. Society needs people to deliver services
and goods.
Throughout history, we have seen how societies improved and developed because of the spirit of
cooperation among its citizens. They shared food, products, gifts, and other materials among themselves to help society
and these are expressions of true service. Today, concerned citizens know how to protect and

uphold the laws and regulations in a society of which he/she is part of. If he/she does what is expected of him/her
as a member of society, the person is directly serving his/ her community.

Following are ways by which the youth can serve the community:
■ Dispose of one's garbage and litter to the proper trash bins. If everyone does the same, then society would be
gradually spared from the dangers of flood or diseases caused by improper waste disposal.

■ Take good care of the facilities provided by the government or by the community where your family belongs.
These facilities may be the playground where everyone can converge and get together.

■ Join a group that helps people in times of calamity. The Philippines is a calamity prone area where typhoons
plague the nation every year. When this happens, you are needed to reach out and serve.

■ Volunteer during nationwide elections. You can act as a watcher to prevent people from cheating. You can
also encourage your family and friends to do the same.

■ Be part of a club that focuses on environmental protection. This club may focus on planting trees to regain the
beauty of Mother Nature.

You can still think of many ways to help your community. Simply
examine the needs of your society and be keen enough to where you
can maximize your talent and skills and contribute something
beautiful for the community in the name of service.
Service to society cannot be possible without the commitment of the
families to inculcate the values of service among its members. It is a value
that enables you to reach out to others in need. You can leave your
comfort zone, to do something good for someone in need, or to bring in
something positive to a community that needs it.

Indeed, when you serve others because you genuinely want to, something good happens: the
relationship may be formed; the family relationship is nurtured, or a strong society is established.

Elderly, Social Attitudes toward a Better Society

Filial piety not only specifies norms within the family, it also provides the social and ethical foundations for
maintaining social order, and thus a stable society. It has provided the moral underpinning for Chinese patterns of
parent–child relations and socialization for millennia.

Why Is It Important Today?

Did you know that filial piety guides entire countries in the way they treat older parents, grandparents, and older
siblings? Showing respect toward parents is common, but filial piety raises it to an art form.

Children raised with the concept of filial piety grow up
understanding that their elders should receive excellent care
as they get older. For many, filial piety is not just a
responsibility, but a solemn religious duty.

Respect, Honor, and Virtue

Filial piety is seen in every part of society culture and much
building a peaceful and respectful society through the
influence of the family members. Regardless of how this
concept is demonstrated, filial piety is a manner of honoring
the life of one’s parents and honoring their legacy.
