READING BEYOND

Deep in the ocean it is very cold, and below 600 meters it is pitch black. There is very little life,
so deep sea fishes have to make the most of any chance they get to eat. Over half of deep sa
creatures can light up parts of their body. These lights are used to attract prey. The light comes
from pouches of luminous bacteria on the side of the fish. Most deep sea fishes have mouths
that can be opened very wide so they can eat large prey.
