MATH IN THE MODERN WORLD

2.
Solution:
Understand the Problem:
We need to determine the number that Melody had chosen.

Devise a Plan:
We could guess and check or trial and error but it will take us a lot of attempts before we
could determine the number. We will use working backwards technique to solve this.
Carry out the Plan:
Melody must have had 48 as a quotient before she subtracted it from 30; a square result
of 144 before she divided it by 3; a sum of 12 after she added her chosen number to itself;
Melody must have had chosen number 6.
Solution:

• 6 + 6= 12, Melody doubled her chosen number 6 which is equals to 12

• 12 x 12= 144, The sum 12 was squared which is equals to 144
• 144 ÷ 3= 48, The result 144 was divided by 3, which is equals to 48
• 48- 30= 18, Then 30 was subtracted from the quotient, this equals to 18.

• Melody used Squaring Operation that prevent us from identifying certainly the
number she really picked.
