Byzantine architecture emerged in the 6th century during the rule of Emperor
Justinian. While there were some similarities to early Christian architecture, this
lesson examines some key features unique to Byzantine architecture like
central-planned churches, rounder designs, and high pendentive domes. The
term Byzantine is derived from the Byzantine Empire, which developed from the
Roman Empire.
