RATION ALE: The student struggled with vowel combinations in her assessment so we will
include that in our lessons.

Standard - CC.1.1.3.D Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in
decoding words. • Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivation al
suffixes. • Decode words with common Latin suffixes. • Decode multisyllable words. • Read
grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.
STEPS OF EXPLICI T INSTRUCTION:
• Before we start, I will let her know that we are going to look for words with the sounds
ai, ea, and ou in the book today
• I will tell her we are going to make our ov:ri reference to help us remember their sounds
o Ai makes a long a sound like rai!i
o Ea makes a long e sound like eat
o Ou makes the /ou/ sound like cloud
• We will make a reference page with the 3 vowel combinations on them and draw pictures
of the words and the words that will help us remember their sound
• Then we will read chapter 3 noticing the words as we go or doing a look back to find
some
