Summary of STS

SCIENCE – Pursuit and application of knowledge and understanding of natural and social
world following a systematic methodology on evidence.
TECHNOLOGY – the use of scientific knowledge for practical purposes or applications, whether
in industry or in our everyday lives.
Technology has to satisfy requirements
• UTILITY • USABILITY • SAFETY
Application of Technology
• ENGINEERING • FOOD • BIOTECHNOLOGY • ENVIRONMENTAL
“The relationship among Science Engineering and Technology”

SCIENCE Seeks to understand the natural world, and often needs new tools to
help discover the answer.

TECHNOLOG
(product and process) are the result of engineered design. They are
Y
created by technicians to solve societal needs and wants.

ENGINEERING Use scientific discoveries to design products and processes to design

products and processes that meets society needs

BIOTECHNOLOGY
• Medicine/Pharmacy • Agriculture Plants • Industry •Environment • Waste industry
• Sea resources
FOOD TECHNOLOGY
• Value chain •Food/ Dairy Marketing •Functional food nutraceuticals • Sensory science
• Quality control and assurance • Indigenous food technology • Food preservation and storage
• Food packaging • Food processing

ENGINEERING

MECHANICAL
Deals with the designs of physical and mechanical systems such as
mechanical instruments, engines, vibration isolation systems, compressors, weapon
system, automobile parts.

ELECTRICAL Design and study of various electrical systems and its application such
as electrical circuits, generators, motors, electromagnetic systems, computer system, IC
circuits, microchips, electronics devices, telecommunication etc.

CIVIL
Designing of public infrastructure such as roads, bridges, dams, water
supply, buildings etc.

CHEMICA
L Deals with the study of application of chemistry, physics, biology, in a
commercial process such as petroleum refining, microfabrication, biomolecule production etc.

“Because of the technology we also consider the”

 Low Carbon and Energy Conservation
 Prevention and Destruction of Pollution
 Waste Treatment and Management

“Good effect of the technology”

 Faster Transportation
 Faster Communication
 Faster Information Sharing
 Faster Agriculture productivity
Note:
Technology is the applied Science
Technology isn’t always shared positive effect.
SOCIETY – Latin word “SOCIUS” means companionship or friendship.
Two primary components

 CULTURES
 SOCIAL STRUCTURE

Society is one of the basic sociological terms. In simple sense, society is a large grouping
that share the same geographical territory, shares a common culture ad social structure and

8. Economy

“SCIENCE AND SOCIETY”

Using science involves understanding its context in society and its limitations.
Science both influences society and is influenced by society.
