Table of Contents
This gives the readers an analytical view of the substance of the thesis, as
well as the sequence of the topical presentation.

List of Tables
Tables are generally prepared to show comparative figures which the
authors gathered and used to explain certain quantitative changes or points to
prove or support his/her conclusions on matters covered by the investigations.
Use a decimal numbering system in labeling the tables within each chapter
and subsection. For instance, if chapters four and five have three tables each,
the numbering would be: 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3. If there are additional
tables in the subsections, then the numbering would be: 4.1.1, 4.1.2, 5.2.1,
5.2.2, and so on. The same numbering system applies to figures and
appendices.

List of Figures
This includes illustrations such as maps, sketches, pictures, plans, charts,
diagram, etc. This list is also placed on a page by itself and follows the same
format as the list of tables. Designate figure numbers with Arabic numerals.

B. Body of the paper

Chapter 1: “the problem and its background”

Introduction
Introductory paragraph
introduce the research topic or area of interest using own words. The
introduction
Narrows from broad stating the main point of the paper.

Page |4
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

Middle paragraph
the first paragraph indicates the main point. The problem is
introduced and
Findings of previous authors who worked on it are cited as support. The
authors and
Year published are indicated.
the second paragraph is the main point which serves as supporting
point.

Concluding paragraph
it is the final paragraph which begins with the restatement of the
thesis wherein all important main points are tied and ends with the major
purpose of the study.

Background of the study

this segment consists of statements on what led the investigator to conduct
the study. It may be generated by some empirical observations, the need to
explore the problem and some other relevant conditions.

Statement of the problem

the main problem is stated first. A good main problem spells out expected
sub-problems that will further clarity it. Sub-problems could be in questions or in
statement form.

Statement of hypotheses

Page |5
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

this segment serves as a direction to the researcher. Hypotheses serve the

same purpose as objectives. These are stated in null hypotheses form, they are
either accepted or rejected.

Theoretical framework
this portion of the thesis gives the reason for the researcher to look for a
new data for analyzing, interpreting and synthesizing the data. This portion also
justifies the rationale for the investigation. The framework cites the theory on
which the study is premised based on theories of authors in order to establish
the relationship between variables of the study.

Conceptual framework
this portion refers to the researcher’s concept or ideas about his study.
There should be a conceptual or research paradigm that shows the flow of the
variables in the inputs, process and outputs of the study. The paradigm should
also include feedback and explained by the researchers accordingly.

Assumptions
this starts with an introductory paragraph. The assumptions are to be
proven and are enumerated.

Scope and delimitation

the first paragraph indicates the scope which reflects the statement of the
problem the persons to be involved (respondents/ participants), the variables
(independent, intervening, and dependent) to be explored the research venue,
date or year to be covered, the time frame and issues to which the study is to be
focused.

Page |6
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

the second paragraph is the delimitation. The factors, situations and

circumstances which may affect data gathering which are beyond the
researchers control are mentioned so as to justify the weaknesses that may
occur from the analysis of the data gathered.

Significance of the study

both the main and specific significance of the study are stated. The benefits
to be derived by individuals from the results of the study are stated in
hierarchical order.

Definition of terms
terms used in the study are defined both conceptually and operationally.
Conceptual definition gives the terms the universal meaning taken from
authoritative sources, while operational definition specifies how it is used or
measured in the study. Only key words in the title, in the statement of the
problem, and sometimes in some chapters that are needed are defined. Terms
are arranged alphabetically.

Chapter 2: “review of related literature and studies”

this chapter summarizes the findings of reading from books, published
articles relevant to the study are presented to support the research work.
this is compose of 75 articles reviewed, wherein 10% is be conceptual
literature and 90% is be research literature.
related literature and studies to be included should be those done lately
about 5 years.

Related literature (conceptual literature)

Page |7
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

taken from books, periodicals, magazines, newspapers, legal reports,

and other published materials containing facts, laws, theories, and other
documented observations. The ideas of each author should be stated
followed by the surname of the author and the year the book was
published. The selected literature should also be categorized into foreign
or local.

Related studies (research literature)

taken from theses, dissertation, research studies substantially
characterized by the presence of: research problem, hypotheses,
objectives, related literature, methodology findings, conclusions,
recommendations and bibliography.

Synthesis
the synthesis of cited literature and studies is the last part of related
literature wherein similarities and differences between the cited studies and
present studies are defined. This justifies the abstract learning of the fast
studies to the present study.

Chapter 3: “research methodology”

this chapter includes discussions on the research design employed, the
instrumentation, data-gathering procedure and statistical tools applied in the
study.

Research design

Page |8
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

This portion explains the design of the study , techniques to be used, how the
subject will be chosen, and the instrumentation validation together with the data
analysis scheme including the application of statistical tools for the treatment of
data to be yielded by the study.

Sources of data*
both the primary and secondary data used and their sources are stated.

Population of the study*

population and sample, how it will be arrived at, and sampling technique
used are
Discussed.

Research instruments to be used*

this indicates the tests to be used if standardized instruments or
psychological tests are required. If the student needs to construct the
instrument, i.e., the questionnaire, interview guide, observation guide or tests,
the researcher should explain its parts, and how the instrument will be validated.
The instrument to be used is appended to the proposal, part of the appendix.

Construction and validation of the instrument/s*

the instrument used in gathering data and its parts are discussed.

Data-gathering procedures*
the following are discussed: preliminaries, letters to inform consent,
permission to conduct the study, visits to the research locale, and retrieval rate.
A flow chart is included only in the proposal, but not in the final paper.

Statistical treatment

Page |9
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

when the study involves statistical data, the researcher should explain in this
section how the data will be analyzed. For instance, if there are hypotheses to
be tested or relationship to be determined. Specify the hypothesis. Dummy
tables may be included percentage formulas are unnecessary.

Chapter 4: “presentation, analysis and interpretation of data”

this chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of data as posted in the
statement of the problem.

Chapter 5: “summary of findings, conclusions, and recommendations”

this chapter presents the following:
Findings
the salient findings of the study are enumerated following the order of
the statement of the problem.

Conclusions
conclusions are drawn, based on the findings presented.

Recommendations
recommendations relevant to both the findings and conclusions
drawn are made.

The bibliography using apa format

this manual follows the apa style of citation.

Appendices
this contains the official documents that serve as evidences in the conduct of
study.

letters. The identifications, appendix “a” and appendix “b”, etc., are to be
centered with the center vertical line position four and one-half inches (4 ½) from
the left edge of the paper and four inches (4) from the right unless bordered
sheets are used in which case, symmetry shall be maintained with respect to the
two side vertical border lines.

Curriculum vitae
a curriculum vitae (cv) should be attached after the last page of the
appendices with a 2x2 photo of the authors on the upper right corner.
