Chapter one
Introduction
Background of DU ICT
DILLA University was Dilla College of Teachers’ Education and Health Sciences with Faculty of
Teachers’ Education and Faculty of Health Sciences in 1996thA.C. However, in 2001, the
College was included in the newly emerging University – DEBUB University. In 2004 Dilla
College once again went through another phase and spring into a full- fledged University by
the councils of minister’s regulation No 129/04. ICT center of Dilla University was
established in 2006 as a computer center, by deploying dialup connection, out-reaching
management offices. Lack of professionals characterizes the center, where instructors from
mathematics and physics departments were assigned to manage and coordinate the office. It
was later in 2007 that an optical fiber installation was activated, exploring almost all the
buildings of the time. Despite the launched developments, its functionality and perpetuity
was obstructed for lack of documentation to refer, and the temporary instability due to
institutional partitioning from the Debub University. Ever since its establishment, the center
has been working closely with different sections of the university to create awareness of
ICT, giving training for some staff members of the University, and most importantly to
expand network and Internet facilities for the University community. The office is currently
established as an ICT Directorate office level with one director five team leaders, 21
professionals and 8 technical supportive staffs.
1
Goal of DU ICT Office
Ensure that ICT is fully integrated into every operation of the University in order to speed
up and improve quality of activities of Dilla University.
Core Values
2
Objectives
Provide sustainable and quality ICT infrastructure and improve student and staff access to
ICT resources in line with university priorities.
Ensure all staff members are motivated and skilled in the use of ICT to spark the culture of
continuous development in ICT expertise and exposures.
Initiate/Develop/Supervise application development for different sections of the University
and provide ongoing maintenance of both the software and the hardware.
Building a digital teaching-learning environment both in terms of teaching-learning
materials and digital resource sharing, promoting interactive academic and professional
communications between teachers, administrative staff, researchers and students.
Provide on time and online user support platform for the University community.
Establish a dynamic and adaptive online University communication network serving
internal and external users.
Expand training and consultancy wings, including income-generating schemes, gearing to
introduce and promote ICT to the internal and external community, by raising the
capabilities and efficiencies in ICT use.
Use ICT for e-learning, smart rooms, video conferencing and tele-medicine.

Internship Experiences
2.1 The section or department which I have worked.
DILLA University Internship Program allows an opportunity to understand the unique environmental
conditions associated with a particular level of organization. It provides insight about future career with
demonstrated academic competence, and a practical experience in the public sector. During internship
program we were in ICT work place from the organization/company of work branch. Because our
department, is more related within ICT work place of task. During internship program I participate in
network design and installation from the alternative of programming. from these two alternatives, I need
to strengthen my networking knowledge.
4
2.2 Teams and Work Relations among Team Members/Other Staff
There was a good team work between ICT staffs and also good communication skills.
They perform tasks cooperatively and honestly.
Have good work ethics with other staffs and respect one to another’s.
Have good social life and smooth relationship with staff members and university communities.
Practical skill
In Internship program I have got a chance to practices what I have learnt in theory classes and I have developed
many skills like; problem solving, responsibility and sociability, Motivation to work, Professionalism,
Honesty and integrity, willing to grow and learn, and to develop self-confidence.
Theoretical Knowledge
In addition to practical skill the Internship program gives a chance to upgrade my theoretical knowledge
through practices and I have seen how the real-world works.
Leadership skill
Leadership skill is important to lead and motivate team members; during my internship time I have noticed that
good leadership is back bone for overall activity to be succeed.
Within two months of internship time it is difficult to develop all leadership skills but I have seen that it is useful to gain
or have a knowledge how in some of the leadership aspects and I will develop the skills I gain in the future.
Personal ethics
Personal ethics refers to ethical values that each individual should practices to their life. Includes:
Honesty,
Fairness,
Tolerances,
concern for wellbeing of others,
Positive thinking,
Open mindedness, and etc…
Professional ethics
Professional ethics refers to ethical values that a certain profession requires. Includes:
Accountability
Integrity
Transparency and openness
Reliability
Offices discipline and etc…
In my internship time I have got knowledge about some ethical issues to be developed for future and also, I tried to
achieve some of them.
Entrepreneurship skill
Entrepreneurship in its literal meaning stands for a person who starts a business and willing to take any risk in order to
make money or success. Nowadays getting a job or work is not easy , so starting your own business is the best
solution. So developing entrepreneurship skill is important. this skill includes self- esteem, self-motivation, self-
confidences, time and money management, ethics and moral, and etc.
6
2.3 Challenges Faced and How Managed
There were different challenges happened during internship program.
The shortage of material to practice what we have learnt.
Less willingness of ICT staffs to show or to teach us the important things.
Sometimes coming late to the work place.
Those challenges are managed as follows:
For the material shortage the material can be purchased at ones and that they cannot bought for only
internship program only.
The commination gap between ICT staffs and internship student is solved by commination only which
means by developing a good communication skill.
We have tried our best to initiate them to fix different networking cable installation with us.
Networking Devices
Here are the devices I looked up during my internship and their functionalities
1.Trunk-we have seen trunk as a communications line or link designed to carry multiple signals simultaneously
to provide network access between two points. Trunks typically connect switching centers in a communication
system.it can consist of several wires, cables or fiber optic strands bundled together in a single physical cable to
2.Keystone Jack is a female connector used in data communications, particularly local area networks (LANs).
The jack is usually mounted in a wall plate or patch panel. A keystone plug is the matching male connector,
7
3.Hole outlet is a hole where may be in a wall used to connect an ethernet cables
4.puncher (punch down tool, also called a krone tool) is a hand tool used to connect telecommunications and
network wires to a patch panel, punch down block, keystone module, or surface mount box.
5.Table Test(Tester)- devices that can be used to check network cables and network connections in the
Ethernet.it measures the conductive between two ends of a cable. It also checks and measures signal for correct
wiring.
6.Tone Generator- allows technicians to identify that wire within a bundle, at a cross-connect, or at a remote
end. So, to trace network cables between two different locations. For example, if you have 50 cables going
from an office to a wiring closet, you sometimes need to identify both ends of the same cable. You can connect
the component that creates the tone to one end of the wire in the office.
8. Network cabinets are generally used for the storage of routers, patch panels, switches and a wide variety of
9.network rack is a metal frame chassis that holds, stacks, organizes, secures and protects various computer
9.Fiber Patch (Connector)- the interface panel that connects multiple optical fiber cables and optical equipment.
We come through different kind of modules- which is 10G interface module and 40G interface modules.
For instance, 40G interface has the capability to transmit data until 40km.
8
OT DR fiber -it is a screen that used to check the place where the fiber optic is broken.
Access Point
B:Outdoor AP:It is an AP that needs free space and can’t penetrate through the wall.
Types of Camera
As I have mentioned there are different cameras in DU for the security purposes.
1. Pith Camera : which is used to control 360 degree. It can be set automatically.
2. Bullet Camera: which is used to control only one direction and not only those there is
box type, dome and others so we have teary to know those types of cameras.
3. Panoramic Camera
For the security purposes they haven’t show as the camera installation it is not recommended.
What I have seen as the problem in camera security it is only video without sound system and I
have asked the DU ICT staffs way it is only video without sound system and thy have
respond to me for security propose but for me there response is not enough.
In general, the camera is connected with DU LAN connection for security purpose if we
connect it with internet (World Wide Web) the hackers may attack the DU information
so it is directly connected to DU LAN and managed by DU ICT staffs.
Types of Switch
1.Extreme Switch
2.Cicso
3.Huawei
9
Finally, We have visited the DU data center: we have visited the data center I have got a lot of
knowledge from the data center that means how internet and internet materials are
connected to give an access. And how switches can be connected to fiber, how core
switches connected to sub switches and also how they are connected to patch panel and
with all different nodes.
As its name data center is the center of all internet infrastructures are connected and stored in
one place for security purpose and for protection from flirty. As you know the internet is
the back bone of the world and the university so, it should have to be protected from any
dangerous thing b/c all the university files are in the data center.
As mentioned above during the stay of one month and 15 days of the practice I have taken
one of the problems of the organization and getting the requirement and analysis it
and design it and implement and also worked and helped the workers by performing
different activities.
10
2.5.2 How to crimp Ethernet cable
Steps to follow to crimp Ethernet cable:
11
2. Strip 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5.1 cm) of the outer skin at the end of the cable wire by making a
shallow cut in the skin with cutter/scissor. Run the cutter/scissor around the cable, and the
jacket should slide off easily. There will be 4 pairs of twisted wires exposed, each of them
has different color or color combination.
White-Orange striped and solid Orange
White-Green striped and solid Green
White-Blue striped and solid Blue
White-Brown striped and solid brown
3. Fold each pair of wires backwards to expose the core of the cable
5. Straighten the twisted wires using 2 pair of tweezers. Grasp a wire beneath a bend with 1
pair of tweezers, and use the other pair to gently straighten the bend. The straighter your
wires, the easier your job will be.
6. Arrange the untwisted wires in a row, placing them into the position, running from right
to left, in which they will go into the RJ-45 connector: Since we have worked in B
structure it has the following order:
White-Orange
Orange
White-Green
Blue
White-Blue
Green
White-Brown
Brown
12
7. Trim the untwisted wires to a suitable length by holding the RJ-45 connector next to the wires.
8. Insert the wires into the RJ-45 connector, making sure that they stay aligned and each
color goes into its appropriate channel.
9. We Use the crimper to crimp the RJ-45 connector to the cable by pressing the jacket. Re
crimp the cable once more to ensure proper connection.
10. Follow the instructions above to crimp an RJ-45 connector to the opposite end of the cable.
Chapter 3
3. SWOT Analysis
3.1 Strength
Strengths are internal positive aspects are under control upon which you may member and work flow of the
13
organization according to some of the strength of DILA university ICT directorate
3.2 Weaknesses
Weaknesses are internal positive aspects that are under your control and that you may plan to improve. Some of
the weaknesses DILA university ICT directorate:
Absence of desktop computer to practice with it and also, we couldn’t find ICT lab we were practicing in
the staff office.
14
3.3 Opportunities
Opportunity is a positive external condition that you do not control but which you can plan to take
advantage. some opportunities of DILA university ICT directorate.
15
Chapter 4
4. Conclusion and Recommendations
4.1 Conclusion
To conclude about the DILLA University ICT office, it is an organization which is going on
development but needs more budget, training and help to moderate its service and doing
more. In my observation when I compare with the real-world technology the organization
is going right with the real-world technology.
4.2 Recommendations
This Entrepreneurship is very important for students because it helps them to now the real-world
Environment what we face after graduation and increases their experience and skills.
Students who have done the practical attachment, could not get any difficulty when they are
going to start their final project work and easily understand what they have to do, how to
make interaction with the employees of the organization and learn how to get the accurate
information from workers of the organization, simply understand, and know their work
discipline, facilitate a way what problems concurrently happen in their work discipline and
get ready to solve the problems
