LESSON PLAN SIX

Teacher: Toumaniba Traoré Date: 20/06/2022
School: FMOS Grade: 1st Year Medicine
Subject: Medical English Duration: 04 hours
Theme: Human Body
Lesson: THE 11 BODY (ORGAN) SYSTEMS
Main objective:
To permit learners to identify the different organ sytems composing an organism (human body)
in English language.

Specific objectives:
At the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:
 identify the organ systems making the human body; 
identify the different organs composing each organ system; 
tell the functions of each organ system.

Conduct of the lesson:

I. Defintions:
 Anatomy: Anatomy deals with the structure of the body and its parts; in other words, the
names of the parts.

 Physiology: It studies the functions of these parts or asks the question, “how do they
work?” The body is a series of 11 integrated systems. Each system carries out one major
role or task. The systems are, in turn, composed of main parts known as organs, the
organs consist of tissues, and tissues are made up of cells.

When groups of tissues work together, they are called organs. Some examples of organs are the
heart, lungs, skin, and stomach. When organs work together, they are called systems and each
one depends, directly or indirectly, on all of the others...

The human body, in order to work well need these 11 major organ systems:
Integumentary (skin)system, muscular system, skeletal system, nervous system, circulatory
system, lymphatic system, respiratory system, endocrine system, urinary/excretory system,
reproductive system and digestive system.

All of your body systems have to work together to keep you healthy. If any system in your body
isn't working properly, other systems are affected.
 Your bones and muscles work together to support and move your body.
❖ Your respiratory system takes in oxygen from the air and gets rid of carbon dioxide.

❖ Your digestive system absorbs water and nutrients from the food you eat.

❖ Your circulatory system carries oxygen, water, and nutrients to cells throughout your
body.

❖ Wastes from the cells are eliminated by your respiratory system, excretory system, and
skin.

❖ Your nervous system controls all these activities with electrical impulses.
1) INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM (SKIN)

Forms the external body covering and protects deeper tissues

INTEGUMENTARY from injury.
SYSTEM (SKIN)
Synthesizes vitamin D, and contains cutaneous (pain,
pressure, etc.) receptors and sweat and oil glands.

Major organs Skin, hair, sweat glands, nails

2
Mr.TRAORE Medical English Med 1 -21-22

• Protect against environmental hazards

• Helps regulate body temperature
Functions
• Provides sensory information

Support and Movement (2 Parts: skeletal system and muscular system)

2. Skeletal system:

The skeletal system is made up of bones and ligaments.

Skeletal system It supports, protects, provides frameworks, stores inorganic

salts, and houses blood -forming tissues.

Major organs Bones, cartilages, associated ligaments and bones marrow

(les os, les cartilages, les ligaments associés et la moelle

osseuse)

3
Mr.TRAORE Medical English Med 1 -21-22

• Provides support and protection for other tissues.

• Stores calcium and other minerals.
• Protects and supports the body and organs; interacts
Functions with skeletal muscles, produces red blood cells, white blood
cells and platelets.

3. Muscular system:

Muscular system The muscular system consists of the muscles that provide
body movement, posture, and body heat.

Major organs Skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle tissues (les tissus

musculaires squelettiques, lisses et les cardiaques)

4
Mr.TRAORE Medical English Med 1 -21-22

• Moves limbs and trunk;

• Moves substances through body;
Functions
• Provides structure and support

4. Nervous system:

Nervous system The nervous system integrates incoming information from

receptors and sends impulses to muscles and glands.

Major organs brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sense organs

• Directs immediate responses to stimuli;

• Coordinates or moderates activities of other organ
systems
Functions
• Provides and interprets sensory information about
external conditions

5. Cardiovascular system:

5
Mr.TRAORE Medical English Med 1 -21-22

Circulatory/Cardiovascular The cardiovascular system, is made up of the heart and

system blood vessels. It distributes oxygen, nutrients, and hormones
throughout the body while removing wastes from the cells.

Major organs Heart, blood vessels, blood (cardiovascular) lymph nodes

and vessels, lymph (lymphatic)

• Distributes blood cells, water and dissolved material

including nutrients waste products, oxygen, and
carbon dioxide
Functions
• Distributes heat and assists in control of body
temperature

6. Lymphatic/Immune system:

6
Mr.TRAORE Medical English Med 1 -21-22

Lymphatic system The lymphatic system, consists of lymphatic vessels, lymph

nodes, thymus, and spleen. It drains excess tissue fluid and
includes cells of immunity.

Major organs Spleen, Thymus, Lymphatic vessels, Lymph nodes and

Tonsils (la rate, le thymus, les vaisseaux lymphatiques, les
ganglions lymphatiques et les amygdales)

• Defends against infection and disease

• Returns tissue fluids to the bloodstream

Functions

7. Respiratory system:

Respiratory system

7
Mr.TRAORE Medical English Med 1 -21-22

Respiratory system The Respiratory system exchanges Oxygen and Carbon

Dioxide between the blood and air and is made up of the
lungs and passageways.

Major organs Nasal cavities, Sinuses, Larynx, Traches, Bronchi, Lungs,

Alveoli

• Delivers air to alveoli (sites in lungs where gas

exchange occurs)

• Provides oxygen to bloodstream

Functions
• Removes carbon dioxide from bloodstream 
Produces sounds for communication.

8. Endocrine system:

Endocrine system The endocrine system, helps to integrate metabolic functions

Pituitary gland, Thyroid gland, Pancreas, Adrenal

glands, Gonads, Endocrine tissues in other systems (la
Glande pituitaire, la glande thyroïde, le pancréas, les glandes
surrénales, les gonades, les tissus endocriniens dans d'autres
Major organs systèmes)

• Directs long-term changes in the activities of

other organ systems

• Adjusts metabolic activity and energy use by

Functions the body
• Controls many structural and functional
changes

9. Urinary/Excretory system:

Urinary/Excretory system It removes wastes from the blood and helps to maintain water
and electrolyte balance.
