GERUND ( DANH ĐỘNG TỪ )

1. Định nghĩa:
 Gerund ( danh động từ ) là danh từ được hình thành bằng cách thêm đuôi -
ing vào động từ.

Eg: coming, building, teaching, …

 Phủ định của danh động từ được hình thành bằng cách thêm “ not ” vào
trước V-ing.

Eg: not making, not opening …

2. Cách dùng:

a. Dùng làm chủ ngữ trong câu:

Eg: Reading helps you improve your vocabulary.

( Đọc sách giúp bạn cải thiện vốn từ vựng của mình. )

b. Dùng làm tân ngữ sau các động từ, giới từ, cụm từ:

 Verbs: avoid (tránh), consider (xem xét), dislike (không thích), enjoy (thích),
finish (kết thúc), forgive (tha lỗi), imagine (tưởng tượng), involve (để tâm,
tham gia), practise (thực hành), suggest (đề nghị), mind (làm phiền),
encourage (khuyến khích), permit (cho phép), risk (gặp rủi ro, gặp nguy
hiểm), recommend (giới thiệu, tiến cử), regret (tiếc nuối), …

Eg: He enjoys surfing the Internet.

( Anh ấy thích lướt Internet. )

  Verbs and prepositions: agree with (đồng ý với), apologise for (xin lỗi vì),
concentrate on (tập trung vào), depend on (dựa vào), dream of (mơ về),
insist on (khăng khăng, nài nỉ), rely on (dựa vào), succeed in (thành công
trong), focus on (tập trung vào), carry on (tiếp tục), …

Eg: The government focuses on improving poverty alleviation.

( Chính phủ tập trung vào việc cải thiện công tác xóa đói giảm nghèo. )

 Phrases: can’t help (không thể không), can’t stand (không thể không), feel
like (cảm thấy), be worth (đáng làm gì), no use/good (vô ích), …
