Gerund (V-ing)
 Gerund là gì
• Danh động từ (V-ing) vừa có tính chất của một động từ (có thể
có tân ngữ theo sau), vừa có tính chất của một danh từ (có thể
đứng ở bất kỳ vị trí nào mà danh từ có thể đứng được)

• Danh động từ là những động từ thêm "ing" để biến thành danh

từ.
paint => painting
love => loving
swim => swimming
lie => lying
Chức năng 1: Làm chủ ngữ trong câu
• Swimming is good for health.
• Walking in the rain gives me pleasure.

• Lưu ý về động từ: động từ số ít

Chức năng 2: Làm tân ngữ trực tiếp sau
các động từ
• admit (thú nhận), avoid (tránh), delay (hoãn lại), deny (phủ nhận),
hate/detest (ghét), enjoy (thích), imagine (tưởng tượng), keep
(giữ), mention (đề cập), mind (phiền), miss (bỏ lỡ), postpone
(hoãn lại), practice (thực hành),, suggest (đề nghị), finish (hoàn
thành), consider (xem xét, cân nhắc), discuss (thảo luận)....
• Vd: Would you mind opening the window?
• I love playing football with my friends in my free time.
• She denied stealing his wallet.
Chức năng 3: làm tân ngữ của giới từ

• Mary is crazy about playing tennis. (Mary rất thích chơi

tennis.)
• Sue dreams of being a pop star.
 Chức năng 4: được dùng sau các cụm từ:
• busy, can't/ couldn't help, can't stand/ bear / face, feel like, it's
no good/ use, there's no point in, it's (not) worth....

+ be busy doing St: bận làm gì

+ can't / couldn't help doing St: không thể nhịn được+ can't stand /
bear / face doing St: không thể chịu được
+ it's no good / use doing St = there's no point in doing St: không
đáng, không cần thiết làm gì
+ it's (not) worth doing St: (không) đáng làm gì
• Ví dụ: She is busy cooking the meal. (Cô ấy đang bận nấu ăn.)
She couldn't help laughing. (Cô ấy không nhịn được cười.)
 Chức năng 5: làm bổ ngữ

• My habit is sleeping whenever I’m sad.

• One of my hobbies is collecting stamps
