MODULE CONTENT

Functions of Communication

CONTROL or REGULATIONS
It is one of the major functions of communication. It is mainly used to control or
regulate the conduct of the other person.
MOTIVATION
It is the formation of specific goals, feedback on progress toward the goals, and
reinforcement of desired behavior.
EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION
It provides a release of feelings and fulfillment of social needs.
INFORMATION
Communication facilitates decision making.

TYPES OF COMMUNICATION

VERBAL
This refers to the use of speech to send a message.
NON- VERBAL COMMUNICATION
Communicating without using words, and instead using our bodies (gestures, touch, eye
contact, facial expression, body language, sign language, appearance, and proxemics).
WRITTEN COMMUNICATION
Using the written word to convey information.
VISUAL COMMUNICATION
It refers to messages that can be seen such as presenting data or objects that are hard to
describe.
