INTRODUCTION

According to the Malaysian Diabetes Index (IDM), citizens of Malaysia today still have a low level of
awareness regarding diabetes and its complications. In the study conducted in May 2021, it was
found that about one in three respondents (37%) with diabetes did not know the readings for an
abnormal blood sugar level. Regarding the complications of diabetes, amputation is a major concern
as 95% of respondents are aware that it can occur in someone with diabetes. Interestingly, although
cardiac complications are the most dangerous, they are the least known (75%). Other complications
include eye damage (93 percent), kidney damage (90 percent), and nerve damage (84 percent).

The statistics of diabetes among Malaysians have increased from 13.4 percent in 2015 to 18.3 percent
in 2019. This shows that 1 in 5 Malaysians has diabetes.

This is very worrying because diabetes can cause various complications such as cardiovascular disease
and a variety of damages such as damage to the nerves, kidneys, eyes, legs, and other organs.
Without prevention, control, and awareness by the community in Malaysia, the number of diabetics
in Malaysia will continue to increase. Therefore, to raise public awareness about the dangers of
diabetes and a healthy lifestyle that should be practised, this project also aims to encourage patients
in Malaysia to continue to fight diabetes and adopt a healthier diet and lifestyle.

PROJECT IMPACT

1. Raising awareness within public society regarding health care to prevent diabetes which can
cause a number of other complications.
2. Providing aid to the needy which consist of pregnant mothers and diabetic patients under the
B40 category through free glucometer distribution for 100 people.
3. Collaboration with the Malaysian Ministry of Health (Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia) and
other non-governmental organisations in educating the community in Malaysia regarding the
dangers of diabetes and the healthy lifestyle that should be practised through the campaigns
held.

11
CONCLUSION

This project has the potential to give a wider social impact grounded on health care awareness
which fits MyHeart and the Malaysian Ministry of Health’s objective in nurturing a community
which cares deeply for their personal health. It is hoped that this project will be able to
educate the public in living a healthier daily lifestyle, controlling their diet, and practicing the
appropriate fitness exercises in maintaining the quality of their health.

With this, hopefully this programme will also be able to achieve the main goal of World
Diabetes Day which is to raise awareness of diabetes in families, encouraging early diagnosis
of diabetes, and educating the community regarding health treatments as well as avoiding
the complications that come with diabetes.
