Locus
Locus
Definition: Locus is the path traced by a point when it moves under
some restriction or given geometrical condition.
Locus of Line
Locus of Parabola
Locus of Semi-circle
Locus of Circle
Some more Examples
Cycloid: A cycloid is the curve traced by a point on the rim of a circular
wheel as the wheel rolls along a straight line without slipping
Some more Examples
Astroid: Astroid is the locus of a point on a circle as it rolls inside a fixed
circle with four times the radius.
Locus: Steps to find Equation

Step:1 Draw a rough sketch showing the conditions given. And mark
the moving point as P (h,k).

Step:2 Apply the restrictions/conditions on point P, to get relation

between h and k.

Step:3 Replace (h,k) with (x,y) to get the final equation/Locus.

Locus: Steps to find Equation
Example Find the locus of a point whose distance from
origin is always equal to 2.
Find the equation to the locus of a point which moves so that its distance
from the axis of x is always one half of its distance from the origin.
Find the locus of a point whose distance from the point (1, 2) is equal to
its distance from the axis of y.
A rod of length l slides with its ends on two perpendicular lines.
Find the locus of its mid point.
Let A(2, -3) and B(-2, 3) be vertices of a triangle ABC. If the centroid of
this triangle moves on the line 2x+ 3y = 1, then the locus of the vertex C
is the line
A. 3x - 2y = 3 B. 2x - 3y = 7 C. 3x + 2y = 5 D. 2x + 3y = 3
Let O(0, 0) and A(0, 1) be two fixed points. Then the locus of a point P
such that the perimeter of ΔAOP is 4, is :

A. 8x2 - 9y2 + 9y = 18 B. 9x2 - 8y2 + 8y = 16

C. 9x2 + 8y2 - 8y = 16 D. 8x2 + 9y2 - 9y = 18 JEE Main 2019

Vertices of a variable triangle are (3, 4), (5 cos θ, 5 sin θ) and
(5 sin θ, -5 cos θ), where θ ∈ R. Locus of its orthocentre is

A. (x + y - 1)2 + (x - y - 7)2 = 100 B. (x + y - 7)2 + (x - y - 1)2 = 100

C. (x + y + 7)2 + (x - y - 1)2 = 100 D. (x + y - 7)2 + (x - y + 1)2 = 100

If (-4, 0) and (1, 1) are two vertices of a triangle of area 4 square units,
then the locus of third vertex is:

A. x - 5y + 12 = 0 B. 5x + y + 2 = 0

C. x - 5y - 4 = 0 D. None of these

What is the slope of a line whose inclination is:

i. 00

ii. 450

iii. 900

iv. 1500
Find the slope of the line, which passes through origin, and the mid point
of the line segment joining the point (-13, 4) and (7, 2).
The gradient of the line joining the points on the curve y = x2 + 2x, whose
abscissae are 1 and 3 is

A. 6 B. 5 C. 4 D. 3

Question
If A(6, 3), B(-3, 5), C(4, -2) and D(x, 3x) are four points such that
ar(ΔDBC)/ar(ΔABC) = 1 : 2, then what is value of x ?
